Offsite backup of my DNS-323

I would like to do a periodic backup/copy of all the data on my DNS-323 and keep it off site in case of a catastrophe like a fire, etc.  What options do you recommend that I should consider?

I'm using RAID1, so one option considering is to buy a third drive and swap it out for one of the existing drives. I can then keep the removed drive off-site as by backup. The new one will get re-formatted and get synched up with the other existing drive.

Then periodically, I can rotate the off site drive with one of the existing drives.

Will this work?

Do you have other suggestions?

At the moment I would not recomend this method (a third drive) as the current firmware is known to format the wrong drive regulary.
The new firmware should adress this issue(but i would wait for other to try that first ;-). You could use fun_plug to attach an usb drive and copy it to that drive.

Re: Offsite backup of my DNS-323

I have my drives configured as two independent drives.
Every night I rsync the content from A to B drive (there is a thread here discussing the rsync command needed).

That way I can easily replace the B drive whenever I want.

Cheers,

That's scary. Isn't having the ability to swap out a dead driver the entire purpose for RAID1?

Actually - no - it's not - the entire purpose of RAID1 is to allow the data to remain accessible even though a drive has failed, how you restore the array to an optimum state is actually not relevant.  Hot swap drives and automatic rebuild is highly desirable but not essential.

Re: Offsite backup of my DNS-323

Mount you NAS on a linux, mac or windows machine then use Jungle Disk to access Amazon S3 service to perform that off-site backup of the data that exists on the NAS.  Its a bit of a kludge but S3 is very cheap.

Unfortunately Jungle Disk doesn't have any embedded binary for the DNS-323

Re: Offsite backup of my DNS-323

I have a similar question - I bought a second DNS-321 with a single drive to back up my first one.  I used Dlink's download facility to make an initial backup but what I would really like to do is have periodic incremental backups taken AND not have the traffic go through any of my Windows boxes (ie have a program run on one of the DNS-321's which copies anything that changed since the last backup to the other DNS-321).  Will rsync do an incremental copy between the two boxes?

Re: Offsite backup of my DNS-323

You can do this ... I did this between two servers I had at home. One would just back up the other occasionaly. I issued the commands manually, but you could do it with a cron job.

check out http://everythinglinux.org/rsync/ for some hints. You'd probably have to do some configurations with dynamic dns to do it from offsite, that's something I've never fooled with however.

Re: Offsite backup of my DNS-323

Here's what I did and it may work for you too. Wireless backup to your basement machine.

I had an old PC running windows XP that I stuck in the basement. I purchased a wireless USB adapter with a 15foot cord that I plugged into the PC and taped alone the wall as high as I could to get the best signal. This computer now connects to my office computer even through the basement. Well I only get under 11Mb speed but that's enough for me. If I had the antenna outside or a better wireless link it would work much better I guess.

How the backups are done:
First I temporarily connect the NAS to the basement PC to make the first backup (several hundred Gb)
Now the basement PC has the 1st backup and only needs to do incremental backups (backups of the stuff that has changed). This is done with a freeware program I downloaded from Download.com called SYNCBACK. It does scheduled backups, incremental backups, full backups, and more.
Since I'm only basically changing pics and a few smaller files, the backups go pretty quickly but even if you uploaded a new movie the backup would work but it would take longer. But you shouldn't care because it's all behind the scenes stuff done automatically. You can still open a remote desktop session to your basement PC and verify that everything is good on it.

that's how I've done it. I'm now going to upgrade to a better router which should get me better wireless speeds.

Hi drak0, I'm pretty late to this game, and your blog is now offline... are these instructions available somewhere else by any chance?
