Hello all, long long time...
I have had my DNS-323 powered off for about 2 years now, and just fired it up again. I built a network server for my house with over 15TB of storage space, and I want to use the 323 as a backup for important files stored on the server. I have roughly 10TB of media on the server which is backed up to two external 5TB drives. This I do manually, not a big deal. I just have to do a back up when I add a new DVD or Blu Ray rip (only ripping discs I actually own and possess).
I started with an issue where I changed LAN IP scheme, and forgot what static IP address the device used. I found what it should have been, but it wasn't working. I downloaded wireshark, still got nothing from it plugged directly into my laptop. I removed the disks from it, did a reset, and now it is using 192.168.1.72, and I can ping it, getting prompt from ssh, and can get to the web interface which is Alt-F...
My issue NOW, is that I am trying to update the IP Address so that I can toss it on the network for use now, but I can't log into the dang thing. I am still running an ancient D-Link WBR-2310 as my home router with a D-Link DGS-1024D (24 port Gig switch). While I DID forget the IP Address on the box, I DO remember that I set up the same admin login info for BOTH the WBR-2310 and the DNS-323. I can get to the WBR-2310 without issue, but not the DNS-323.
What options do I have for password recovery on this box?? I want to KEEP what is on the hard drives, as I know there are some things on there which haven't been backed up anywhere else yet, but I don't care about the firmware. I am more than ok starting back at square 1 getting the Alt-F firmware back up to get this up and running, just not sure what to do.

I was able to get this resolved. Following the FAQ, power on the unit, hold reset button for 10 seconds, then telnet to port 26, and run command "rm /etc/web-secret". You then enter a new password the next time you visit the web UI.

HA... the issue continues... After taking the unit from my living room to my server location in the basement (after graceful shutdown from web interface), it is NOWHERE to be found on the network. Took my laptop down there again, and it is back to the SAME IP Address it was at when I started looking at it this morning. Ok, so I go to change the settings again, and boom, password is bad again. I go through another password recovery, save, change IP, save, add to network, confirm good, reboot, and its gone again...
I took it apart suspecting that the CMOS battery was bad. After I got it apart my jaw hit the FLOOR... There was NO BATTERY present. I have NO IDEA how that is possible. When it was actually in use, not ONCE did I ever have an issue changing settings, and there was no loose battery in there. Oye...
Luckily, I bought a bunch of the batteries not long ago, because I have to get around to replacing one in an old gaming laptop I have.
I put in a battery, but it still isn't saving the config after a reboot.... what a PITA... Guess it is time to take the back ups off the discs, and shit-can the unit...

I think the battery is only for the clock. The settings are stored in flashrom, which doesn't need power to keep it's data.
Apparently the flash partition containing your data are bad. It might help to erase them to refresh them. Unfortunately the wiki doesn't say anything about the filesystem. I don't know the 323 very well.

I'm such a tool.... The REASON it wasn't holding the IP address was because I wasn't going to to the settings tab to save the config. This has been sitting with dual 3TB drives in it, nearly 6,000 hours of run time on them with 0 data. Filled up my 14TB rackmount server, and gave this a glance again. Figured I would post in case anyone else has the same issue...
