Uploading to the unit killing me.

hi,

i am running Ubuntu Linux 7.04, ii have the DNS-323 with 2x 750Gb Seagate HDD´s.
i have the unit connected to a 10/100 router.

i have two other machines on the router, one vista, one XP.
i can upload and download files to the unit from both the windows machines (at good speeds to)
however i cannot upload files correctly from my Linux box, (i can connect to the unit, i can mount the disks, but when i attempt to transfer data it times out or send the files extremely slow, about 100b/s. i can however download them from the unit extremely fast.

all that i can think of is that it is taking time to go from et3 to NTFS.
i have checked my computer with every possible method i can imagine and it seems to be working fine on the network,

e.g. i can both send and receive data from the other two windows boxes.
i put a NTFS harddrive into my Linux box and that also would not upload, but would download.

i have updated the firmware to 1.02b and rebooted both the unit and my computer more times then i care to mention.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

- also i attempted to connect the unit to my computer directly and it cant seem to assign an IP, i was woundering if i can use the USB, or is that just for printers. or if there is a way to get it to connect just to my computer.

Re: Uploading to the unit killing me.

You seem to think that the DNS-323 uses NTFS - it doesn't - it uses ext2.

I'd like to believe your problem lies in the SAMBA conversion on your linux box, because you're going from ext2 (or ext3 - which ever you have) to CIFS/SMB across the wire and then back to ext2 in the DNS-323.  Since you're not having problems from Windows, it has to be in the linux box.

In the standard unit - the USB is for printers only.  I'm not going to say that you can't use it for I/O, but you'll have to go fiddle with the fun_plug for that to work.

Re: Uploading to the unit killing me.

If you want to transfer data from *nix, why don't NFS directly? that's more nature for both DNS-323 and your *nix system.

I could be wrong but I don't think the DNS-323 supports NFS out of the box - as far as I know it's ftp & SMB/CIFS.

It might be "more nature" for your *nix system, but not your DNS-323.

Re: Uploading to the unit killing me.

Hey, i have just formatted and removed the windows partition from my computer,  and i still cant upload to the dns. i have configured it for FTP, it´s about as fast as FPT can go, but still slow in comparison to normal transfers.

i´m not sure what this nix thing is, and i have tried a SMB mount to no avail, but i might try this CIFS thing.

thanks for the info on the USB port, and everything else.

Re: Uploading to the unit killing me.

Ok i managed to mount both hard-drives using cifs

sudo mount -t cifs //10.0.0.12/Volume_1-1 /media/Volume_1 -o username=viruzeno,password=password
sudo mount -t cifs //10.0.0.12/Volume_2-1 /media/Volume_2 -o username=viruzeno,password=password

and now i can copy from them, and to them with good speeds, but when i copy to them i get constant ¨access denied¨ errors. if i press retry i few times it works, and copys the data really fast.

any ideas?

Re: Uploading to the unit killing me.

SMB/CIFS - Server Message Block/Common Internet File System - it's old name/new name.

OK - I'm at a bit of a loss as to why you're doing what you're doing.  You start by saying uploads and downloads from Windows machines (which by the way use SMB/CIFS natively) work at good speeds, but from an Ubuntu system, they're slow - logic would suggest that the problem lies in the Ubuntu system, which I believe uses SAMBA so that it can "talk" the SMB/CIFS "language".

Now you're talking about reformatting and removing Windows partitions, I suspect from the Ubuntu box, but I don't understand the reasoning - why should removing a Windows partition on a disk in a linux box help SAMBA work faster?

Oh - the *nix thing is just another way or saying unix or linux - some people tend to lump them togther, because of perceived similarities.

What noodle was suggesting is that if you have your Ubuntu box using NFS (Network File System) which most linux boxes can do, that a NFS file transfer to the DNS-323 (which is also linux based) would be faster.  He could be right, like I posted in my reply to him, I could be wrong, but I don't think the DNS-323 supports NFS unless you do some hacking.

Re: Uploading to the unit killing me.

well that sure cleared some things up,

as for my reformatting i did have an old XP system on this computer as well, (from when i first installed Linux), and now that i have made the full on switch to Linux it was time to remove it. also i read a post somewhere that windows turns off the lan card as to disable wake on lan, so i assumed that if i removed it this would no longer be the issue.

what i am doing now...

now i have added the two mounts into my fstab file and they are beig mounted on boot, (as opposed to using the network browse window to access the dns). this was both to make it faster and less clicks for me.

now what is happening is that i can copy from the dns extremely fast, however when i copy to it from my Linux computer although it is now quite fast i am receiving frequent permission denied"errors,

this in my mind is a Linux error, however i can copy files fine from my Linux box to a windows box, with out the frequent errors, so i am not too sure.

i will be posting this error on the Ubuntu forum as i think that it may have gone past it being the box, but being a Linux and networking noob i can never really be too sure.

i hope this clears up whats going on.

I thought everyone here use fun_plug smile. If you want, download fon's fun_plug package, it has nfs support.
