DNS-323 and Second Copy

Had my DNS-323 for a little time now and it has performed well.

But I'm having a little problem that I think needs someone who knows about file systems, especially NTFS and Linux EXT2 to explain why this could be happening.

If I copy a file from my XP SP2 machine to the DNS-323 using Windows explorer, why would a backup program like Second Copy, which I am assured uses the date/time stamp only to compare files, still think the file on the DNS is older than the one on the NTFS machine?

Files with the same date/time stamp are not supposed to be copied and I know it works perfectly between my Windows NTFS disks, it's just copying to the DNS-323 thats the problem. Looking at the properties of the files in question, the date/time stamps look identical, at least as viewed from a Windows environment.

Mostly it works, like 90% of the files are fine, but there are some 30 files that keep on copying across everytime I run Second Copy.

Looking into this further and after a number of support emails to Centered Systems who make Second Copy, there is a switch that can be used by editing the profiles file and entering IgnoreTimeDifference=2 which results in Second Copy ignoring time differences of 2 seconds in the two files.

This works for about 25 of the remaining 30 files but leaves 5 still being copied. Have tried IgnoreTimeDifference in increments up to 31,536,000 seconds which is one year and it makes no difference, those remaining 5 files get copied everytime.

I know DNS-323 Talker uses Second Copy, I wonder if he has the same problem but help from anyone would be appreciated.

Re: DNS-323 and Second Copy

Doublejet - I do use SecondCopy, but I have to admit I haven't checked for that issue, so I'd have to take a look at it.

Not sure how soon I'll be able to get back to you - I haven't been doing anything but work lately...we're trying to get a release out the door and we're at risk of missing our date, so I'm pretty much chained to my work desk lately.  THere are a couple other second copy users who may be able to chime in.

Re: DNS-323 and Second Copy

Well, I think I found the problem.

It appears the files that were being continually copied had an apostrophe (') in the file names. Apparently Windows (XP,NTFS?) does not like copying these non standard characters across a network to a non windows machine or Windows 98 etc, so it changes it to something else.

But if the file on the destination machine across the network is viewed from a Windows NTFS machine it will still look like an apostrophe, even though it's been changed to something else. So everytime Second Copy does its backup it thinks it has found a new file to copy.

I removed the apostrophe, it works now.

If anyone is interested there is a similar progam to Second Copy that is just as easy to use and its freeware, its called SyncBack

Glad you sorted that out, Doublejet...and thanks for the link to SyncBack.   Good sleuthing.

Re: DNS-323 and Second Copy

Hi Tack and everyone,

What type of compression do you get with SyncBack?  I gave about 300gb at the moment i wish to backup.... just wondering if this software will do this.

Cheers

Re: DNS-323 and Second Copy

Hi Chumby -
from the Syncback help file - http://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/S … SE-PDF.zip

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Fast compression with options, 256-bit AES encryption, Zip64, and self-extracting Zip
file support
....Support for MODE Z compression....
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
etc etc

There is HEAPS on it - look at page 148 onwards....
hth

[edit: from memory the free version of syncback only does straight ZIP compression limited to 4GB zip file sizes...... Probably details on their web site...]

Re: DNS-323 and Second Copy

Thanks for that TACK.

Have had a little bit of a look... not sure if it can compress enough as I need though.  From what I can gather of the files are already compressed - jpg pdf etc then you can't get the filesize down too much.

I wonder of having three drives and set up a rotating RAID1 setup where you replace a drive in Volume_2 (and take it off site) is a better way to go?  I just can't seem to find a back up software solution that seems efficient and quick...

Any ideas?
