Just What Are The Risks RE: Bricking DNS-323?

Hi everyone,

First of all, great forum. I got my 323 about 2 weeks ago and have got around to successfully installing telnet on it.

By the way, I had those "appears to be working, but I just get a flashing cursor" errors when I installed telnet at first. I discovered that using a "real" FTP client (i.e. not XP's command line OR a explorer) to upload the files made a difference. Possibly to do with a binary / ASCII mode transfer? Anyway, it works. Pretty much exclusively with PuTTY (and not with SecureCRT or Windows command line either). That might help some of you guys wink

So, to the point: I've read a lot about the risks of bricking the DNS-323 (incl. large warnings on the Wiki page) using telnet, even from just "issuing the wrong command". I'm something of a newbie to this, can someone please elaborate on the matter? Is it specifically to do with fun_plug, being the "start up point" for the box when it turns on?

Secondly, now that I have telnet installed, is there a way to (a) "add a layer" such as Debian that will remove me from the risk of issuing a bad command to the 323, and (b) what's the next logical step for me? I'd like to install a utorrent client if possible; set up a lhttpd and some daemons.... Should I upgrade away from BusyBox, or are the "limitations" to what you can get running on the 323 with this telnet hack, etc.?

Thanks for your time, and sorry if the questions above seem ambiguous! smile

Nobody? smile

I've checked out the "Installing Debian Sarge" thread, but the links therein aren't working. I'm not sure what version is required, etc. so if anyone could point me in the right direction, that'd be great. Thanks!
