I would like some advice if possible.... I am generally a Windows guy and have limited Linux/Unix exposure.
I am using an out of the box DNS-323 as a very basic file server. Seems to be doing just fine.
I have a situation where I am thinking of using DNS-323s but I am running into some short-falls for out of the box.
I basically have 3 small offices (each office 10 users). Each office has users with desktops or laptops. I would like to have the following:
1. Each user's computer backed up (My Documents, Outlook PST files, etc...). No need for full backup of system files.
2. Each office have a central file server they can access for shared documents (this seems to be easy to do now out of the box. Each office is linked with a 1.5 MBit connection).
3. Each office's "backup" of files remotely copied off-site.
I was thinking of putting a DNS-323 in each office. Pointing user's My Document folder to a share on their local DNS-323. I am wondering if the PST files being on the DNS would cause a problem in performance, etc... Any advice?
I tried to setup a remote backup via FTP using the DNS-323 I have and it was problematic. There was a lack of a log to see why stuff wasn't working. And there appears to be no notifcation is things do not backup properly. I definately need a GUI interface since I will not be the one administrating this long-term.
I looked at open source backup systems thinking I could run a remote backup, but since I am backup up Windows boxes, there are no "Agents" installed like BackUp Exec. I noticed that some of them use RSync which brought me back to the DNS-323 (which does not have it installed out of the box).
So my question is, if I hack/fun_plug this machine, what exactly will that get me in terms of closer to a solution? It sounds like it just runs Linux and you can telnet into it. Is there a web GUI with extended all this funactionality or is this a telnet experience once things are installed/running.
Can the backup needs above been met using a DNS-323?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Using fun_plug is basicly a telnet experience.
If you get some windows software and backup the files to the local DNS. You can easily manage the off-site by using rsync on the DNS. I.e each DNS could Rsync its backups to another DNS. And you could set it up as a circle.
However doing this will require some hacking via telnet.
