Hi, I am a running Kubuntu Linux and I can see all the files on my DNS-323 but don't seem to be able to write to it. I don't have any users or groups setup and access is set at R/W. It works fine from my Windows machines. Any ideas?
Permissions in Kubuntu show: owner can read & write, group can read, others can read. How do I change permissions?

Do you use NFS or Samba?
I use myself NFS mounted from Ubuntu Feisty (worked also with Edgy), and can read-write with no problem. On the DNS 323, NFS server is not native, but very easy to install with Fonz's fun-plug. NFS mount is also straightforward on Ubuntu. I would suggest this as a good solution.
I have not much experience for SMB/Samba configuration on the DNS 323, but my other XP SP2 PC is also able to read-write using the native samba mechanism. I use the "Admin" user to connect, I don't want to bother with special users and permissions. All this works fine.

Same question here. I have to constantly telnet to the DNS and type in "chmod a+w -R <your directory>".

I am using Kubuntu Feisty with Samba. If I switch to NFS will I still be able to see my Windows files?

What do you mean exactly by "my Windows files". The ones on the DNS 323? They are not "Windows files", but Linux files you access in Windows through Samba.
Your linux PC will use the NFS client, while your Windows PC will use the native SMB one, to access to the very same files. On the DNS323, you must then have both servers running (Samba and NFS). This does NOT make any change to the files you access, just the way you access them.
If you move to NFS in Feisty, I noticed that the mount operation must be done in some rc file (which makes a "mount all"). Leaving it in fstab did not do the job by itself, as it did in Edgy. This seems to be a regression between Edgy and Feisty. But the workaround with the rc script works fine.

No problem here. Automatically mounting from fstab dooes work without problems (Kubuntu 7.10). As the others I suggest to use NFS not Samba within Kubuntu (better network speed and better file permission handling). By the way, would be good if you check the user account and UID on the NAS with the one from Kubuntu.

It's not clear yet why it works on some Feisty implementations, and not on others. Several users reported this problem on the Ubuntu forum, and gave the solution, by the way. Anyway, fdunn1ca, if you encounter this problem ("nfs mount does not work at boot time"), there is a solution.
Concerning UID's, the default behaviour is that they start at 1000 on Ubuntu, and 500 on the DNS323.

Yes, and the UID on the DNS could be changed to 1000 (and saved with FONZ utils)

I ended up changing my fstab line to this: "//DLINK-685CC5/Volume_1 /mnt/D-Link smbfs password=,fmask=777,dmask=777" and it worked, ie. I could write to the disk.
