DNS 323 vs. CH3SNAS

Hi all,

after some research obviously the DNS 323 gives me the most bang for the buck: i need a nas that is fast (glan), silent, allows spin down and wake on lan, (holds two drives) and is kindof customizable (e.g. fun plug).

but the ch3snas is even cheaper than the 323. if they are the "same" or the firmwares are interchangeable, would there be something wrong with buying a ch3snas instead of a 323? i mean, after some reading it seems the fw is interchangeable btw. the two nas, so gimme some reasons why i should NOT but a ch3snas instead of a 323. or tell me what other hardware to order which fulfills my demands wink

cheers and thx for your replies.

EDIT: some reading here shows the dns 323 (and probably the ch3snas then too) has no wake on lan support. not so bad, the disks spin down (standby with 1.5 w consumption), thats ok.

Re: DNS 323 vs. CH3SNAS

I 've done it and buy'd a CH3SNAS. But at the moment you can't exchange the firmware of the CH3SNAS with the one from the DNS323. But doesn't matter, because actual firmware seems to build on version 1.03, and most important:  fonz plugin does work without problems.

Re: DNS 323 vs. CH3SNAS

I bought the CH3SNAS smile

I've used all scripts and tricks from this forum and they've all worked wink So i think the DNS-323 is only the expensive Version of the CH3SNAS wink

btw: Wenn the Disk spins down, you can lower the consumption a little bit by switching off the fan wink (http://dns323.kood.org/forum/t185-does-time.html) Perhaps i'll measure the consumption next week smile

Re: DNS 323 vs. CH3SNAS

Thanks for the replies!

I like the fan-control-thing. But i wonder if it wouldnt be possible to simply remove the fan completely if running the NAS with only one hdd (Samsung 500 GB), and not running it 24/7, only 8/24 with spindown hdd. would the heat be too high?

cheers

Re: DNS 323 vs. CH3SNAS

Sorry, but i'd never use a 3,5" HDD without Fan when running without RAID. I've lost around 400GB of sensitive data with overheated HDD's... never again. Try running it with a fan. Btw: you don't have to remove it, just switch it via the software off (see threadlink from above)

Just my 10 cents
