I have detailed instructions for doing this at http://dns323.kood.org/howto:install_debian. You can install debian and boot into that instead of the standard firmware. This is still rather alpha, so be careful.

You won't be able to update the DLink firmware when you do this. If you wanted to update the DLink firmware, you would have to put everything back and boot to DLink's software.

Did you follow the instructions exactly? There are a lot of things you can do to make it not work, and there are lots of little details to follow.
Can you give the exact output of pivot_root?
