hi guys,

1, can someone tell me what that is?
and 2, why i would should go that route?

i am assuming its partition type but not really sure

ext2 is a filesystem, like ntfs, FAT etc. I haven't got my dns-323 yet but if I remember from reading it supports both the ext2 & ext3 file systems. ext3 is basically ext2 with journaling, so ext2 will be faster but is more likely to lose data when there's a crash and may need fsck'ing when you reboot. do a goole search for "ext2 vs ext3" for more info.

Ext3 is removed from support. Firmware 1.03 does not even list it anymore.

The ext2 is a file system for the Linux kernel. The the kernel of the DNS-323 is Linux and for that reason it's using ext2.

You can read the ext2 in Windows using Ext2IFS http://www.fs-driver.org/
It a great utility if you need to connect the hard drives from the DNS-323 unit into your computer.

is there much work envolved in this? and is it better than out of hte box file system within the 323?
