I'd love to have a videoconverter app on my DNS-323 that could convert videofiles from different formats to MPEG4 - so I can stream them from my 323 to my Xbox 360...
anyone know of any usable converters that would run under linux - one the dns-323? I have one of these converters running om my Vista laptop - but I'd rather let the NAS box do this :-)

You are aware of the limitations of this box. Install debian and give it a try. But be aware that this will stress your box.

erm... converting a single photograph from 5 Megapixel to a PAL TV screen takes the DNS roughly 5 minutes...
I would rather recommend to convert the movies on the PC and store the converted files on the DNS!

or acquire a media box that plays DiVX files and not use your 360. currently i am in the same boat, having a 360 however, it seems (as of recently), im having issues with my Vista Ultimate box.
oh, and for 360 users who have MC on their network (vista / xp), you CANNOT convert a file which is not stored locally on the MC PC's.. eg, use Vista / XP as the MC, Xbox MC map the DNS through the the MC of XP / Vista and transcode / decode / convert files on the fly
i tried this last night will ill disapointment
may have to fork out some $$$ for a media center console that plays *.avi's and the like rather than use the 360 for this

Ok - thanks for the feedback guys - I'll give up the idea :-P I am aware of the limitations - but the thought was that this little box was pretty much just sitting there all day doing nothing at all - I though it was a good idea to let it have somthing to chew on while I was sleeping or at work so it wouldn't get bored :-D

Is someone out there able to stream MP4 videos to the 360? I am using TwonkyVision and cannot stream those files (which are in h.264 format). I know the 360 can play the files but no luck in the streaming side.

does your media player (on your PC) is defaulted to play MP4's? if not, make sure it is .. then give it another shot
