ext2 file system compression

Hi all,

I'm looking at a way to enable file system level compression for one of the disks in my dns-323 and found the "addin" e2compr (http://e2compr.sourceforge.net/). Being a newbie at linux, would like to know if its even worth my time exploring this option. Another option that I've found is squashfs (http://squashfs.sourceforge.net/) but its read only.

For the curious, the reason why i want to have compression on one of my disk is because i'm using the 2nd disk purely for backups purpose. I will be employing the snapshot style backup via rsync as described here http://www.mikerubel.org/computers/rsync_snapshots/ but would like to save on the overheads given that both disks are identical in size. (i.e. when my primary disks get closer to full, my backup disk would probably have run out of space without compression)

Thanks in advance!
