Mac OS X NAS compatible Backup Software

Is anyone on here using the DNS-323 NAS units with MAC OS X and using NAS compatible backup software? Nothing I can find seems to work very well with Mounting the NAS volumes. They all seem to be geared for USB plug and play devices or .dmg image backups to the local harddrive. Ideally I'd like to be using them with TimeMachine in the next version of OS X but I believe that needs the Apple Filing System (AFS) which the DNS-323 doesn't do sad

Any info appreciated.
Thanks,
Gareth.

Re: Mac OS X NAS compatible Backup Software

Really? That's great news! So what I heard about the requirements for AFS are not true then?

Many thanks,
Gareth.

Re: Mac OS X NAS compatible Backup Software

KRH, can you confirm if the iBackup you use is the online backup solution or the software from grapefruit.ch ?

Thanks,
Gareth.

Re: Mac OS X NAS compatible Backup Software

Another option, that I use, would be to use rsync. There is a shell-script called rbackup that calls on ssh and rsync to perform the transfers. The advantage is that only files that have actually changed are transferred to the DNS-323. The disadvantage is that you would have to install SSH and rsync on the DNS-323 (well, wouldn't you want that anyway?) and that you have to have some familiarity with the Terminal in OSX (isn't now as good a time as ever to get that?)

I tried it with my TimeMachine, it found my Volume1 share drive

However, it doesn't get pass the login part. It popped up w user GUEST and I tried pretty much everything, it does not authenticate.

Any thoughts?

Re: Mac OS X NAS compatible Backup Software

Have been trying this iBackup now and found that "a bit slow bud works"  is a total understatement! This thingy is incredibly slow!!!
I started a Backup of my 25GB user dir in the morning and in the evening it advanced to 6.8 GB. This speed it will take 2 complete days to finish!
It also fails to backup the mail directory in the system evironment. When i try it just stops and needs to be force quit to try again.

Any clue why this is so slow?

At this moment it says " not responding:"  in the activity monitor, but in my experience it can take up to 10 min then it will start copying some files again.

Re: Mac OS X NAS compatible Backup Software

Have been testing several "free" backup solutions for the mac since I found iBackup extremely slow and very buggy.
In the end I found "Carbon Copy Cloner" to be the best solution. It does all that iBackup does, and managed to backup the same 25 GB in just two hours (6* as fast as iBackup). Even better: it can write the backup into one large image file making disk use much more efficient then the plain file copy that other backup solutions use. This way the authorisation structure will also be preserved. Apple authoristation structure mostly gets lost while writing files to an ext2 file system. This does noet happen while writing to a disk image that is (virtually) apple formatted.

Re: Mac OS X NAS compatible Backup Software

I use ChronoSync for daily mirrors and CrashPlan for continuous updates. Since I improved Airport / Samba / Mac / DNS-323 performance it all works beautifully.

Re: Mac OS X NAS compatible Backup Software

I use SuperDuper! with a target disk image located on my DNS-323 samba share. It's kind of click-and-go...
