Deleting large file takes a very long time

I am using my DNS-323 as a backup device with Symantec Backup Exec 11d.

The problem is, that deleting a very large backup file (about 300GB file) or stripping it down to zero bytes takes an awful lot of time (about 30 mins or more). During that time, this file has disappeared from the file system, but cannot be reused immediately, since there is obviously a background process which frees the space and only after 30 mins or so that file is reuseable again.

Backup Exec works with Media Sets, that are basically files that represents a virtual tape device. When it comes to reusing a Media Set (when the override protection has expired) Backup Exec runs into timeouts, since it cannot use this backup set immediately, since it is deleted in the background, and I get an errormessage from Backup Exec, thinking that the NAS Media Set is offline.

Any ideas how I can solve this problem?
