Suggest any Media Players?

I'm considering getting a network media player to play files that are on my DNS-323.  I did a little research and found two players that may meet what I'm looking for (plays .iso, music files, mpegs, jpegs, etc)

Ziova Clearstream CS510 High Definition Network Media Player (~$200)

http://ziova.com/cs510.php

Viewsonic NMP-530 Network Media Player (~$700-$800)

http://www.viewsonic.com/products/large … er/nmp530/

The clearstream seems like the obvious choice based on price, but I was hoping someone might have some experience with one of these or similar products.

Any help?

By the way, I don't have an old Xbox so I can't mod it like other people do...sad

Re: Suggest any Media Players?

i'm considering this as well. What about the D-Link series? DSM-510, 520, 750?

Re: Suggest any Media Players?

Well as far as I can tell, none of those can play .iso or transport stream files.  iso files are image files of DVD's, and transport stream files are ripped shows from my DVR

Ziova CS510 High Definition Network Media Player
Video Formats Supported
MPEG-1
MPEG-2 MP@HL (720p & 1080i)
MPEG-4 ASP@L5 (720p & 1080i), such as XviD, 3ivx, HDX4 etc.
WMV9 MP@ML (720p & 1080i)
Nero Digital™ up to (Main) Cinema Profile
QuickTime™ .MP4 (MPEG-4 SP video with AAC audio)
DVB/ATSC Transport Stream Support
ISO and IFO Parsing Support (*Experimental Feature)
SRT, SUB, SSA and SMI subtitles

DSM-520 Wireless HD Media Player
Supported Video Formats*
• WMV9
• MPEG 1
• MPEG 2
• MPEG 4 (Supports MPEG4 Advanced Simple Profile only)
• Xvid
• AVI (MPEG-4 Layer Only)
• DVR-MS

I can't find any specs on the 750, but I'm guessing it'll be a little better than the the 520, but pricier than the Ziova.

Re: Suggest any Media Players?

I have Rapsody N35 (also called Co-World N35). I like the player but there are some issues with it.
First off, and the most irritating issue is that the player has problems with subtitles when playing .iso-files. Read more on the subtitle issue here: http://www.mpcclub.com/modules.php?name … mp;t=13007

The second issue is that the picture "stutters" when streaming from the DNS-323. First I thought there was something wrong with the player and then I bought an internal hdd to put in the player. Problems gone! It seems that when playing an .iso file the 100mb connection is not enough to stream it properly.

Well, I don't know if you got any help from my reply, but the issues above could be good to keep in mind when looking for a player.

Re: Suggest any Media Players?

FYI, I did some more research and found similar streaming issues with the Ziova CS510
http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-media-r … 35005.html

I'll probably wait for the D-link DSM-750 to come out with some more specific specs.

here are some other reviews from Cnet

The D-link brand does a better job of streaming video, but doesn't support iso files "...DSM-520 doesn't support DVD menus for virtual DVDs stored on your computer's hard drive. It did play individual VOB files but with mixed results. " --Cnet

Acoustic Research Digital MediaBridge - DMP3000
does a great job with streaming HD video, iso, mpegs, etc.  Doesn't have front readout (interface through tv menus only) doesn't support internet radio and doesn't play copy-protected audio files(i.e. itunes)

Apple TV -- Only streams iTunes and YouTube content

Netgear EVA8000 Digital Entertainer HD --
plays high-def 1080p video, a little glitchy and doesn't support iso (But does play vob)  no front readout (interface through tv menus only)

Mvix MX-760HD
"...wireless performance is poor for video; no 802.11n; 480p, 720p, and 1080p modes have video-quality issues; image shifted to the left; no fast-forward/rewind on audio files; cannot play M3U, WPL, or ASX playlists; cannot save playlists"

Re: Suggest any Media Players?

If you are not looking for HD streaming, I can recommend the good old Pinnacle Showcenter 200.
Works extremely well in my setup streaming MP3 audio, Divx Movies and Shoutcast radio from my DNS323 (running Oxyl server).

My Showcenter is attached to a 32" CRT TV set (Sony) via RGB scart and via digital line to my audio receiver (Denon).

Sound is great (including AC3) and the picture quality is good for me (to my eyes better than regular TV, not as good as DVD - but close enough).

For connection to between the SC200 and the DNS323 I have tried both, wireless and cable and went in the end with MSI powerline (ethernet over powerline) adapters which worked a little better than wireless.

In the end the SC200 is very cheap to get on e-bay.

Cheers,

Emacs

Re: Suggest any Media Players?

I own the D-Link DSM-520, the Netgear EVA700 and the EVA8000.

The DSM-520 has a fair video quality and a usable UI. It has no problem with the Twonkyvision server.
The EVA700 is almost as good as the DSM-520. Firmware seems not to be updated anymore - and it should be.
The EVA8000 has a lot of potential but the firmware is still buggy and development does not seem to be very focussed. A/V quality is good - if it works.

All devices have problems with crashes and stuttering (framerates!). I got them for free (testing :-) and I would buy NONE of them for a price over 100 €!

I also own an Philips SLA5520 for audio only. This is a great device but does not support WPA2 (it does support WPA though).

Appearantly you can use the dbox 2 and Dreambox for UPnP now too. I have not tested this feature but I guess support is limied to MPEG2 and MPEG1 (also as TS) and MP3.

Re: Suggest any Media Players?

I'm using the DLink DSM-520 and Twonky on the DNS-323 and don't have any problems with that setup.  However, I'm looking for something that supports H.264, so if anyone has any recommendations on that I would like to hear it smile  TIA

Re: Suggest any Media Players?

well I'd prefer something with HD streaming (along with iso and ts files)  I'm probably going to wait till the DSM750 comes out... supposedly sometime in November.

Re: Suggest any Media Players?

I own a CS 505 and in combination with Conceptronic CH3SNAS it works perfectly. the only thin I still have not working is the ISO DVD-VIDEO support.
