Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.

Where to go from here?

Since I bought the DSM-G600 I have languished by the fact that I have always had permission issues (both Vista and XP, I can't delete files on my own device without telnetting in thanks to fun_plug and sala's great website), a poor user interface and, that the speed of the device leaves something to be desired. Needless to say, without some solution I would have given up on this device a long time ago.

Thanks to Sala's great website and the hard work of many others I finally see some hope on the horizon. I currently have gotten a fully functional telnet environment opened up via fun_plug and a gentoo chroot environment. However, it just doesn't seem to satisfy the itch I have to make this device work for me.

I want too:

Completely remove all useless crap from the firmware. In other words, I want to be able to install or remove software per my needs, just like DD-WRT.
Control access permissions in such a fine grain manner as to never have a problem with Vista again.
Use this device as my one stop torrent device (I know, already possible however, it just doesn't seem efficient to me yet).

I am not one to complain about the work someone has done and contributed for free, I only offer up my gripes in hopes that they might spark ideas in people much more talented than I.

*Note: If none of this makes sense blame it on too much alcohol. I promise to be sober when I respond, lol.

Re: Where to go from here?

Just get ride of this firmware. As I understand, you already are using gentoo chroot then reasonable step forward would be to hdd boot to gentoo. After this you will end up just a regular Linux installation where you can install new software (almost just like DD-WRT).
If you have or if you willing to solder a serial port then you can flash custom kernel which will boot userspace off from hdd.
If you don't want to flash or you don't want to solder then you must setup a second ext3/2 partition (sda3) and use a loader.o to boot custom kernel which will set a userspace to sda3.

All necessary info are located in various wiki pages and http://dns323.kood.org/forum/t28-Firmwa … -Plug.html (I suggest you to read all pages to get the big picture).
