Hi all,
I'm trying to add a serial port to my DNS323. I have a TTL-RS232 converter board with its own 5v power supply, so I only connected the TX pin and the RX pin. When I power the unit on, I can see all the boot messages, but can't type anything, the console does not respond at all. I'm a software guy, my hardware knowledge is very limited... here are my questions,
1) should it echo back when I type if the serial port is working properly?
2) do I need to connect the GND pin to the converter board?
3) can i do a loopback test from my DNS323 by shorting TX and RX? or do a loopback test by shorting TX and RX on the converter board?
Thanks in advance!

Yes, GND needs to be connected to both sides.
Characters should echo back, I think.
You can do loopback tests, I guess, but I don't know if that will really help.
Have you tried disabling flow-control in your terminal emulator? And perhaps carrier (DCD) handling?
