Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.

NFS, AFP, chroot debian problems/questions

I am starting with the DNS-323. Fun_plug works, chrooted into debian, that sort of works. I want to use it for a diskless server and as an external drive for my macbook. I also want to be able to give an occasional windows machine a network drive.

NFS works for the linux server, my old server, not yet diskless. But unfsd doesn't work with the mac. I read about it here on the forum that there are some issues with OSX and unfsd. Mounts are readable, not writeable.
I read that timemachine from leopard (the new OSX, if you missed the hype) can use a network drive if it is mounted with AFP. So, AFP would be very nice to have. I also found out that mounting NFS isn't as straightforward as one would think. It might be possible that unfsd works with leopard but I don't know. I only want to upgrade if I have a decent backup of the mac and that depends on the DSN-323.
Installing chroot debian was easy. The first chroot also worked, although I didn't mount anything. (sys, proc etc.) But when I started using the provided fun_plug script I got some problems with commands that can't be found. Ha!! solved that one! the fun_plug path is still in the environment, just thought about it while typing this. Exporting the path without  /mnt/HD_a2/fun_plug.d/bin solved it. Well my point would have been that i didn't want to use chrooted debian for nfs or AFP but it seems to work again. So, I'll investigate debian again. But just in case it doesn't work:

It seems to be possible to compile your own modules. But there aren't recent threads about it. The NFS module didn't work I read somewhere here. Did anyone try AFP? I would prefer not to use debian but to leave the DNS-323 configuration as simple as possible.

One final question: are Fonz' fun_plug scripts still working with the 1.04 firmware? If I can't get AFP or NFS working with the mac I'll have to use samba. As sambav2 doesn't support UTF-8 and sambav3 does I would prefer to use the new firmware with sambav3.
