Could not resolve 'ftp.dk.debian.org'

I have asked about this before but got no response, so I'll post again in a more obvious place.

A lot of people have trouble with the 'apt-get update' lines during the chroot_debian install, which has been resolved by correcting the sources.list file to read: deb http://ftp.dk.debian.org/debian sarge main contrib

This is a direct copy from my sources.list file, yet I still get a "Could not resolve 'ftp.dk.debian.org'" error. Has anyone else experienced this? Can anyone suggest what could stopping the DNS-323 from accessing ftp.dk.debian.org?

I have (temporarily) placed the DNS-323 in the DMZ, so the router shouldn't be blocking it from accessing the internerd.

Any help?

Re: Could not resolve 'ftp.dk.debian.org'

Let's look at this systematically.

What is the error - could not resolve ftp.dk.debian.org - telling you?  That the DNS-323 could not resolve a URL to it's associated ip address.  This problem could result from several things, mostly DNS (domain name server) related and many of which you have no control over.

The first step is to determine if it's DNS-323 related - can you resolve it from your computer?  Put the line into your browser window or try to ping the site - does it resolve?

If it does - and it did for me - then start looking at the DNS-323, specifically at the LAN setup - do you have a DNS server specified?

Re: Could not resolve 'ftp.dk.debian.org'

Hi Fordem

I can ping ftp.dk.debian.org (without the trailing '/debian'). If I enter "http://ftp.dk.debian.org/debian" into the browser, it does sweet FA. However, "http://ftp.debian.org/debian" returns results.

I updated source.list to read: deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian sarge main contrib
Still unresolved.

I updated source.list to read: deb http://ftp.debian.org/ sarge main contrib
Still unresolved.

The DNS-323 is setup to use my router as its DNS (192.168.1.1), and the router is setup to retrieve the DNS address automatically from the ISP. When set to 'DHCP client' (in Lan Settings), the DNS-323 won't let me add a secondary DNS (my ISPs). So I changed the LAN settings to 'Static IP' with  my ISPs primary and secondary DNS addresses, and the router as the IP gateway; restarted the DNS-323, restored source.list, tried again, still couldn't resolve.

I can ping from a terminal (within my OS), but not from within a terminal under Debian on the DNS-323. The short fix (short of resolving the DNS issue) is to place the resolved address in the source.lists file. That seems to be working at the moment, but is far from desirable.

Re: Could not resolve 'ftp.dk.debian.org'

ftp.dk.debian.org is an ftp server - it may not be accessible using the http protocol.

Enter ftp://ftp.dk.debian.org into your browser and see what happens, if it works for you try editing the scripts to match.

Thanks for trying to help me 'nut this out', Fordem.

From the Debian terminal, I can't ping ftp.dk.debian.org; so the problem seems to reside within domain name resolution, not protocol; wouldn't you say? If I can set up a secure FTP server without needing to solve this DNS problem, then I'll be happy. Now that I've managed to get 'apt-get update' to work, I'll continue with the chroot_debian install, then try setting up the SFTP server. Hopefully it will work; fingers crossed...
