I am trying to mount my DNS-323 onto a Sun Opteron running Red Hat 2.4.21-27.ELsmp.
I can sucessfully mount the unit with
mount -t smbfs -o guest,rw,fmask=0000,gid=staff //NAS_1/Volume_1 /mnt/nas1
But only root can write to this drive.
I also tried lmounting with different usernames, uid, gid but still only root can write to the drive.
If I execute
cd /mnt/nas1
touch junk
ls -l
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root staff 0 Nov 28 11:08 junk
chmod 0777 junk
chmod: changing permissions of `junk' (requested: 0777, actual: 0755): Operation not permitted
Any thoughts on how to allow non-root users permission to write to this drive?
I also have the latest firmware update installed (1.03).
Thanks.

Use fun-plug and install nfs.
This is not a dns issue but rather a linux mount issue.
But as the dns is a Unix box with a unix fs it is kind of going around in circles to use cifs/smbfs.
I would rather setup dns!
