Using Onkyo's TX-NR801 mServer/NetTune with DNS-323

Has anyone explored/had success/failure in trying to get music stored on a DNS-323 streamed to a home stereo system built around Onkyos' TX-NR801 receiver?

I'm wondering whether I can get my MP3s over to the "stereo" system via the DNS-323's uPNP server without having to buy another intermediary Media servicing device.

Re: Using Onkyo's TX-NR801 mServer/NetTune with DNS-323

It looks tricky.  The TX-NR801 talks to PC client software called 'Net-Tune' in order to get audio content through your network.  That means it's some proprietary format and won't just read off of a file server on your network.  I did see that Integra's NAS-2.3 Net-Tune Server runs embedded Linux, so at least Integra has gotten the Net-Tune system compiled for Linux.  I doubt they would share it with you, since you'd basically be making their product obsolete.

Seems like you'll have to have a PC running Net-Tune, getting its data off of the DNS-323 (through a normal mapped drive probably).

Re: Using Onkyo's TX-NR801 mServer/NetTune with DNS-323

BLB,

Thanks for your insights. I think you may be right. Unfortunately, if you are, that means I have to continue to *complicate* my setup with add'l devices rather than simplify it. The whole notion of getting a DNS-323 would be to dispense with having any desktop-style PC (to run proprietary NetTune client which is crappy anyway) altogether and just have NAS for files/MP3s/Videos, etc and a laptop in the house to get at most of it.

But, how do I get all my DNS-323 hosted music to my *REAL* stereo, i.e., not play it on through iTunes and the weak speakers on my laptop? Must I assume I'll need a media server of some ilk.

Any suggestions?

Re: Using Onkyo's TX-NR801 mServer/NetTune with DNS-323

Hi...I have the TX-NR905 and I use a DNS-323 with Twonky. The UPnP media server that comes with the 323 is pretty ordinary.

Not sure if the 905 and 801 use similar operating systems...but on the 905 the 323 appears in the Server/USB/Internet Radio menu....I'm not sure that you have to use Net tunes if you don't want to......

I was wrong...the 801 does not have UPnP capabilities....so you do need to us the Net Tunes...

Re: Using Onkyo's TX-NR801 mServer/NetTune with DNS-323

Too bad. From your experience, what general architectual designs would you suggest to *bridge* DNS-323 (non capable of running Onkyo's proprietary NetTunes) hosted MP3s to a networked (on same netowrk, etc) Onkyo TX-NR801. What intermeidary media server might anyone suggest?

Desired attribs:

Easy to use menus
Easy refresh of music library 0 recognizes when new songs have been added
Great sound quality
