Hi all,
I own my DNS323 only since a few days but it runs me now crazy.
I want to use the DNS323 as an iTunes server in our home network to share all our mp3 files. After a first test with a small number of files ( which runs perfectly good) I copied all the mp3 files (>400GB) to the DNS323. To update the iTunes list on the DNS323 I tried to refresh the iTunes server but the refresh process hung up after a while and the DNS iTunes server was not longer available for the iTunes on my PC. I tried to refresh the iTunes server several times but it won't work.
Does anyone have an idea if there is a limitation to the max number of files which the DNS323 iTunes server can handle?
Thx in advance
H-Man

Hi,
the firmware is V1.03.
What's about the Beta Version 1.04, anyone out there who has test this version?

Hello H-Man, I had exactly the same problem and the thing was really driving me nuts, the refresh hung and I didn't get the itunes server from the DNS-323 as a resource in itunes clients. I was crosstesting a lot and after many nights of pondering only came up with the conclusion that it was totally f..ed. However, I made one last attempt as I felt I had narrowed the various possibilities down.
1. I reinstalled the firmware (1.03) just to make certain that the installation was all right.
2. I created a new empty folder for the mp3s.
3. I made a refresh on the EMPTY folder. Worked fine.
4. I added a couple of mp3 folders into the previously created folder and made a refresh. OK.
5. I kept on doing this with increasing amount of mp3:s. Fine except one time when the thing hung again but apparently I got around it.
I currently hold +4000 songs and +30Gb in the folder.
I don't know if the previous 1.03 installation was garbled or if the NAS can only handle refresh of a limited number of files each increment. Already spend too much time to answer that one as well, but anyway its working. After that I also installed funplug + Twonkymedia and now I got a perfect digital home streaming mp3:s, pictures and film also to my PS3.

The refresh will hang if there is an mp3 file which it can't read properly.
You might want to try a newer version of mt-daapd (i.e firefly).

OK, then my analysis was just a heep of mumbo jumbo! It was simply due to a single file or so. Really cheap refresh function, I must say.
1. What are the criteria for proper mp3 reading (e.g. corrupted file etc.)
2. Are there any other formats that the refresh function of the itunes server does not handle?

Hi Frodo,
thx for the hint. It seems really that there is a problem if there are some files the iTunes server can't read properly. I delete the Volume and copied the mp3s again directory by directory to the DNS. But additionaly after each copy of a directory I made a refresh of the iTunes server. So I find out that there are 2 directories which includes corrupt files. After copying it to the DNS the refresh doesn't work. After deleting it the refresh works fine again.
So I will run tonight a check to the Source Disk and hopefully I find the corrupt files.
Also I think about to install firefly. Is it really a better version of the current iTunes Server?
Kind regrads

Hi,
short update.
After many hours of testing, scandisk and copying directory by directory to the DNS I found one of the beast files on the disk. No idea why it confuse the iTunes server so much. It looks normal like all other files. I could play it with the media player and it sounds good. No hidden attributes and so on.....
Anyone who has an idea why it confuse the iTunes server so much ??
Kind regards

Try to add it into iTunes and change the ID3 tag version. Right click on it and do "Convert ID3 tag ..."
I think this should solve it. Check what version of ID3 tag it is before you start and change to a different.
Good luck!

I've also the same problem but it works with a little less tan 12 000 MP3 files. I'm still under 1.03 firmware I will try more, but for sure I tried with 400 000 with no success through the Internet with DAAP
What about UPnP? Anybody tried via Internet? How do I config my router? etc?
