error message - interpretations?

Everything was working good now I cannot access (nor any users)my DNS-323 and get the below message.  I reformatted the drive and reloaded everything (2 days) thinking the files corrupt but no avail. I have restored it to factory default and started all over still no luck. editted ip address for privacy

FTP Folder Error

200: Type Set A
227: Entering Passive Mode (xxx,234,143,105,223,155)
150: Open ASCII mode data connection for directoryu listing
226: Transfer Complete
421: Timeout (120 seconds) closing control connection

Re: error message - interpretations?

Probably this is a firewall issue. If you're trying to access the FTP server from a PC that is located behind a firewall and this firewall opens port 21 for FTP but no other port necessary for the FTP transfers, you get exactly this behavior when using passive mode. Try active mode but note that this is possible only if your NAS is not in a NAT'ed network. See http://dns323.kood.org/howto:open_ports_ftpd

Re: error message - interpretations?

Depsite my doing everything possible I am not able to get this DNS-323 to accept users and allow them to sign on remotely.   The unit will allow you to get to one or two layers into the file folder systems provided you log in each step of the way but eventually stops co-operating and gives the above Folder Error or You do not have permission error.

Spoke ot Dlink today, your all correct, they know less than I do.

Opera browser did at first gain open FTP access but later resorted to the behavior of IE 6, their technical support is stumped and states it is usually IE 7 that causes problems.  I am getting so sick of looking at it on my desk I feel like throwing it out the window. I have had this unit for less than 30 days, it is going back to Tiger Direct in the morning, they can replace it with another and I will see how it performs or they can give me my money or a store credit.

The price has jumped from $189.00 to $249.00 .... Christmas is not going to be good for retailers I speculate.  OUCH

Re: error message - interpretations?

By the way there is an easy way to change your FTP from passive to active and it is located in the Internet Options.  Simply unclick the passive mode and apply ..... This did not fix my "problem"

Re: error message - interpretations?

A solution would be to chroot into debian and set up your own ftp server. This has some additional advantages:

* FW 1.03 comes with a version of WU-FTP that has some security leaks. You could use a better one.
* The built-in FTP server offers only little possibilities to restrict access. I think in a self-installed FTP server you have more opportunities.
* FW 1.04 comes with a pureFTP server - so far I didn't find a way to configure it to use a defined set of ports to make it work in a NAT'ed environment like mine.

Re: error message - interpretations?

Well back home from Tiger Direct, new unit all set up, same problem just like the Tech Support said it would be.  They offered no solution or any hope for one.  I DO NOT RECOMMEND this product to anyone, it has proven itself unstable and non-functional as an FTP Server with remote access.

Thanks for your reply, what your suggesting is over my head to do.  I am rather a beginner in FTP and networking. Pretty much a home end user. They are selling it to the likes of people like me forgetting to tell us that we are guinea pigs (BETA TESTERS) on a new unproven product.

I cannot find anywhere a FW 1.04 could you direct me?

Re: error message - interpretations?

In the thread New Dns-323 Firmware V1.04b58 With Release 11/05/2007  I found the link pointing to the 1.04b58 still working.

There were two newer versions since then: 1.04b61 and 1.04b63 where b61 was "released officially" but redrawn by D-Link from their official web sites. I didn't find any sources for these version. I have installed 1.04b58 on my device. Works fine.

According to an announcement in the D-Link support forums there is a chance that there will be a 1.04 before Christmas.

I suggest that you save your data to another (external) harddisk before updating the firmware (you never know, you know... :-)
