Hi,

Just got the box and what surprises me is that my transfers between the box and my windows xp machine are very slow 700MB file needs ~ 30-50min. The 50 min. using the explorer, and ~ 30min. (~ 400KB/s ) using Total Commander)

The same file transferred from the same machine booted to Linux desktop, samba share mounted via cifs, needs only about 2-3min. Though,on Linux surprises me that writing up onto dns323 is faster 15-18MB/s than reading down from it (6-10MB/s).

Is there anything I can tweak to speed up the transfers form and to my windows box?

My configuration:

Dns323 fw: 1.03
PC: XPsp2 e1000
neatgear adsl/router with 10/100 switch

I guess you need to look at your WindowsXP box - because the problem is not likely to be at the DNS-323 end.

Let's look at your scenario - Linux desktop, samba share mounted via cifs - sounds like you're using the exact same services on the DNS-323 end. You also don't mention any details about your network, which obviously plays a part in the transfer.

Is there anything you can tweak - sure - is there anything you can tell us about the Windows box? Certain network cards are known to be sluggish with Microsoft's drivers, disk fragmentation, disk I/O mode - there's lots of stuff.

Finally - for what it's worth - I can transfer 2GB of data from my WindowsXP box, across a 100 mbps link to my DNS-323 in under 4 minutes, and about half that if I switch to GbE - and that's a stock DNS-323 running 250GB Segate Barracuda 7200.9

Thanks for the tip. It turns out that the problem was the default dirver settings on Windows box. Now everything is fine!

the beta SP1 for VISTA WORKS GREAT. it transfers FAST. dont know if this beta fixes some issues with accessing the 323 shares though. mine worked off the bat without SP1

I noticed an improvement as well after installing SP1. In general, I think that service pack addresses issues with file transfer/copy speeds.
