Hi there,
currently I'm streaming MP3s and DivX/Xvid files from my DNS323 (running Oxyl) to my Pinnacle Showcenter 200. All this works very fine and all would be good if I hadn't bought me a Full-HD LCD TV last week ;-)
Now I'm looking for something to replace my aging ShowCenter 200.
Currently I'm very unsure which way to go. The options as I see them are:
- PlayStation 3
- XBox 360
- Self-Build HTPC
Honestly I don't care much about the gaming aspects of the first two. My objectives are:
- Either BlueRay or HD-DVD playback.
- Support for HDMI output - if possible up to 1080p
- Easy streaming of audio and video content (MP3 and DivX/Xvid have to be supported) from a NAS, preferably from the DNS323 (Oxyl, Twonky, or built-in UPNP server)
I'm aware that the HTPC offers some further features, like integrating a digital cable TV receiver and the capability to record digital TV, which I find rather exiting. But I loathe the amount of work needed to build and set-up the HTPC. (yes, I'm lazy)
As far as I researched on the Internet, both X-Box and PS3 should be able to play DivX/Xvid now or very soon, and both should have HDMI with 1080p - right?
Can anyone comment on the three options? Any pros and cons?
Cheers,
Emacs

Hi emacs, this is the best for FullHD, you can play everything dvx/xvid, matroska HD files .mkv h264 etc. @ up to 1080p and home-network with samba/cifs and NFS...but he don't have any type of DVD/HD-DVD or BL drive....
Here in Italy is expensive: 400€, but i think in US is too cheap..

Firmware 2.10 for the PS3 plays divx/xvid - but doesn't seem to support avi which is a touch annoying as most things I find to watch are in avi. I thought avi was working but I trried last night with divx/xvid avi's with no luck. I'll have to have a look when I have more time.

Was just looking around - the PS3 xvid/divx problem appears to be a problem with Twinky - nothing to do with the mp3:

At the moment I stream to two PC's running Mediacentre, xbox, and the xbox 360.
The Xbox doesn't handle HD content, anything larger than a HDTV episode, 350mb to 700bm, is choppy and hangs. Both PC's are fine and the 360 is much better with the last flash only refusing to run a few older divx under version 5+. It even did a few AVI's I had on the drive.
Twonky was what I used as it's the only solution I'm aware of for streaming to the 360.

Thanks for all your replys!
I have been looking at the games currently available for X-Box and PS3 and couldn't find a single one which I found interesting.
Furthermore I found that some of the movies I like are only available as either BluRay or HD-DVD - so my choice would have basically been based on the movies I like...
The Dvico TViX M-5100SH looks tempting indeed.
But in the end I've decided to go for a self-built HTPC.
That way I have most control over the box and what I can and cannot do.
I have some spare parts lying around which I will use as a basis (Core2Duo E6600, GA-965P Mobo and 3GB DDR2 Ram).
I will complete that with an ATI 2600 Pro graphics card (passive cooling and HDMI output up to 1080p).
Adding a decent case and a quiet power supply should cost me about 300,- Euro now.
Later I can add a TV receiver card and a HD-DVD or BluRay drive.
The box will replace my ShowCenter 200 and my current DVD-recorder in the long run.
Yes, it will be a fair amount of work before I have that set-up working, but I guess it's the smartest way to go for me.
