Hi,
My DNS-323 (Christmas present from my other half ) is behaving a little oddly. Having enabled email alerts, every time the device boots up, or reboots, an alert claiming that "A Hard Drive Has Failed" (wouldn't it be nice if it said which one?!) is sent. The two drives are configured as a single RAID-1 array. Copying files to, and accessing files on, the device seems to work but, whilst I can see the left hand blue LED blinking indicating disk activity, the right hand one remains solid blue at all times.
After removing the (suspect) right hand drive, the alert is still sent on boot up, but data is still accessible. However, if I remove the left hand drive completely and replace it with the right hand (suspect) one, no drives are available at all (in the Status screen). I guess this pretty conclusively means I have a DOA hard drive (but doesn't explain why I get the alert with only one (good) drive in the device, unless this alert is meant to be sent if one of the drive bays is empty).
Is there anything else I should check before returning the suspect drive? Unfortunately I don't have another PC in which to test the drive.
Regards,
Alan.
P.S. DNS-323 firmware level is 1.03, both drives are Western Digital Caviar SE16 500GB (WD5000AAKS).

Think about it - a RAID1 array requires a minimum of two drives - doesn't that explain why you get the alert with only one (good) drive in the array?

Doh! When you put it like that, it's obvious, isn't it?
One dead hard drive on its way back to dabs.com ...
Thanks fordem!

Glad I could help - I'm curious though - I'd love to know what sort of failure allows you to have the blue drive LED on AND create a RAID1 array.
The unit is supposed to show an amber LED for a failed drive, something that I have never seen, even when I have installed known defective drives in an attempt to force it on and if the drive were really DOA then you should not have had the option to create any sort of RAID array

That's a good question. I should have known things weren't quite right from the outset. When I first logged in to the device and was prompted to format the drives, everything seemed to go well. Then, after rebooting, I was again prompted to format. I was forced to power the device off and on before I was able to login and get past the format screen. Strange. Almost as strange as being able to create a RAID1 array with only one functioning disk..!

I am glad I found this posting - I have got exactly the same issue. As there was no amber LED I had assumed that it was some kind of temporary problem that had been got around. I did look at the D-Link documentation to no avail! This was with version 1.03 of the firmware - I wonder if this will be/has been fixed
Looks like I have to get my hard disk replaced as well then.

An update, just to complete this story. My replacement hard drive arrived, I installed it in the DNS-323, switched it on and... hey presto, the new drive was recognised, and the unit allowed me to format it as the second drive of a RAID-1 array.
I'm a very happy bunny!
