On my dns-323 how do i set up many users for one shared folder ?
Thanks

create a folder, add permissions to said folder
either manually map those users to that folder (though not through not root share).. just map the whole path or script it

Sorry not sure what you mean totally, i assume your saying create a folder in volume_1, then add permissions to it in windows ?
I just tried another suggestion which was to put my three users into a group, but then all the users get the same permissions because the group is set up.
I can't believe this thing is so confusing to set up the way all nas drives should be able to be done, ie create your folders, add users to those folders using different permissions.
My buffalo linkstation pro was a breeze to set up, took me only 20 mins tops.
I was going to get 2 big drives for it, set it all up as raid 1, and copy all my stuff from the buffalo, then sell the buffalo, but now i'm not so sure ?
Thanks for the reply anyway

i take it that the buffallo supported NTFS persmissions. unfortunately the 323 does not. this would explain why you can do it with your other device and not within the DNS. you can still create your permission groups through the DNS web interface though. you wont be able to do it off of windows native GUI

Corky,
The reason the DNS-323 is not working like your Linkstation Pro is because of a
configuration option in the D-Link (FW v1.03) provided smb.conf file (this file
controls how the samba application behaves).
If you didn't know, "Samba is an Open Source/Free Software suite that provides
seamless file and print services to SMB/CIFS clients." [from www.samba.org].
In other words it allows the Window OS client to read/write to the linux filesystem
on the DNS-323 and Linkstation Pro NAS.
The DNS-323 web GUI allows you to modify the smb.conf file; however, there is
an option in the DNS-323 (FW v1.03) smb.conf
security = SHARE
which you are not able to modify via the DNS-323 web GUI.
With share-level security, the server (NAS) accepts only a password without an
explicit username from the client (Windows OS). The server expects a password
for each share, independent of the username.
This is the behavior you are observing.
Your Linkstation Pro uses the smb.conf option "security = user" (which is default
security option for samba since v2.2x). This option allows you to setup a username
and password for each user and grant each user read/write permission to the
shares independently of the other users.
Another thing you may not be aware of, is the DNS-323 (FW v1.03) uses the v2.2.8a
version of samba and the Linkstation Pro (FW v1.11) uses a newer, more capable, version
v3.0.21c of samba. There are rumors that the next version of D-Link's firmware, v1.04
for the DNS-3232, will have the newer v3.x version of samba, whenever D-Link releases
that version.
I believe the DNS-323 can be set to security=user, but I have not tried this myself.
Share security is sufficient for my needs. To use you own custom smb.conf file you will
need to install Fonz's fun_plug and create some scripts to start samba with your custom
smb.conf. You can search the forum for threads about customizing the smb.conf file.
SImething that you may not know about, is that Buffalo Tech has recently (Dec. 07) introduced
a product (in the USA) called the Linkstation Pro Duo, which adds RAID0/1 features missing
on previous Linkstation Pro devices. This LS-PRO Duo is very similar to the DNS-323 and priced
about the same (although the LS-PRO DUO comes with drives already installed).
I haven't read any reviews on the Linkstation Pro Duo, yet, but is had several feature which I find
particularly lacking in the the D-Link FW v1.03 for a network file server, such as samba v3.x, XFS
journaling filesystem and UPS support. Plus Buffalo Tech has a longer, more mature*, NAS
development history and a very active "hacking" / support group at www.nas-central.org
*I have been part of the Buffalo Tech NAS "hacking" community since 2/04 and own
several Buffalo NAS devices:
- Linkstation (v1 PPC running Freelink v1.0 [Debian 3.1] )
- Kurobox HG (PPC running Fedora Core 4)
- Linkstation Pro (v1 ARM running Freelink [Debian etch])

wow mig, thanks for that reply
I did get the latest 1.04 beta firmware from here which i think has samba 3.x as you mentioned, as last night i flashed the dns-323 as i have nothing on it yet and only one drive in there at the moment. I know it's not a proper release as such from d-link.
And i seems to fix some vista issues at least for me anyway. when i set up one user and share i was able to go into network, open up dnd-323, open up the shared folder via the username and password. That never worked on firmware 1.03. I also tried it in ubuntu 7.10 and could access it fine the same way. And in xp sp2 the usename was still greyed out, but it was ok via drive mapping. So it's a step in the right direction.
One thing that's never been there from 1.03 onwards is the defrag section in tools, maybe because i only have one drive in it ? or it's been removed ?
Anyway i will have a look into this fun plug and see if i can change the security to user.
Cheers for the info anyway..
