Hi all,
I have a peculiar problem with my NAS system - I currently have my printer plugged into the USB port on the NAS which acts as its Print Server. My wired machine has no problem printing, and transferring files at full network utilization. I also have 1 desktop and 3 laptops on wireless, two on Win XP pro, one on Vista Ultimate and one on Vista Home. These wireless machines take ages to spool a page to print, and transfer to the NAS is extremely slow (think 25 KB/S according to the Vista estimator). I am thinking this may be a router problem but wondered if you guys have any suggestions...
Thanks.

I have the same issue and the same router. My wireless laptop takes a very long time to spool, but it is running only on the slow wireless protocol. I was thinking of installing a WPC54G card so that it can run on the faster protocol and that might make a difference.
What wireless speed are you running at?
The other problem I have is that Microsoft Word and Excel both pause for a long time immediately after they start, I think because they're looking for the printer.
Just noticed you posted this a long time ago - have you been able to fix the problem?

They don't - they neither know nor care whether the printer is there or not, until you try to print to it.

Oh ye of little faith ;-) http://support.microsoft.com/default.as … -us;280821
They shouldn't, but they do... I've implemented your LPT port fix from another post, which works fantastically, thanks! Now Word and Excel boot nicely. A college of mine also had a similar problem when he took his laptop home, he traced it to Excel/Word pausing for ages looking for the printer from the work LAN. (Its Excel 2000 and Word 2000, but the MS KB article applies to 2003 also)
All fixed now though thanks to your LPT post.

I stand corrected - but - here's the reason for that statement - I have never experienced that problem, despite long forgotten and no longer available printers from client sites still being listed on my laptop - reading the knowledgebase article does explain why though -
Microsoft Windows is using a printer driver that is located on a network print server, instead of a local printer driver on your hard disk. When you use a remote printer driver, you may notice that it takes longer to change your default printer setting, and sometimes Word may print documents more slowly than you may expect
The norm for me is to have the printer driver installed locally - in fact, I didn't know there was any other way to do it.
