Hi I had two drives in RAID1. I decided RAID1 on this device is a waste of space, so I reformatted into Standard. The EasySearch utility finds the device and Volume_1, Volume_2, but when I attempt to map to them, it asks for a username and password. It didn't do this before.

I have no users or groups set up at all and have never configured any users. The ftp server is disabled. The only change I've made is to change the drives from RAID1 to standard. fun_plug is not installed. Firmware is 1.03.

I also have a connected printer, it is also no longer functioning.

Any idea why this change has introduced a requirement for a username and password and what is the best course of action?

I have no data on the drives any more after the reformat, so am open to all options.

Client machine is WinXP SP2.

Are the DNS-323 and the client in the same workgroup?

Wow, astounding. I changed the DNS workgroup on the DNS to upper case: WORKGROUP and now it works. I didn't even reboot the device so ... I think this shouldn't have actually worked.

I have now rebooted the device and its still OK after the reboot.

As I said, it all worked fine before the reformat even in lowercase, so I have no idea why this worked.

Ah well. As usual, when something is buggy, don't stop to wonder why something works. Just accept it hey!!

FYI: The DNS-323 is Linux based, pretty much everything in Linux is case sensitive - i.e: "Filename" != (does not equal) "filename". Also there is little you should have to reboot a linux server for. It's not "Buggy" - it's design...

Hi HaydnH,

Its definitely better to have the workgroup name in uppercase.
However, it was working before the reformat when the workgroup name was in lowercase.
All that was done was change the disk format to Standard from RAID1. Nothing else was changed.
The workgroup name specified in the admin browser panel has now been changed back to lowercase, and its still connected with no problems.
The implication is that:
- The case of the workgroup name makes no difference in this particular situation, although to avoid potential issues I agree it should be in uppercase
- Editing the workgroup name probably twigged something in the DNS that allowed a connection without a username and password, as before
- The "Design", if not buggy, can certainly be improved on ;-)

Update; it has nothing to do with case.

Every time I reboot the DNS323, it will ask me for a password if I try to map a drive to it.

The workaround:
- Go to the web administrator
- Edit the workgroup name, but don't change it. I usually just delete the last character and retype it.
- Save settings

And now it works and will allow drives to be mapped.

So, HaydnH: Would you say that's buggy or design? ;-)

If you have a local Network Access User named "0000" delete this one.
