Vibrating front plate

I own the DNS-323 for about half a year now, with two 500 GB drives from Samsung, and it works fine, with one exception. The front plate has a tendency to vibrate and the noise can get very loud. When this happens, I move the plate a little up or down or to the sides, until the noise disappears. The individual parts of the front plate seem to be put together rather loosely, including the metal sheet on the inside of the cover.

I have found few references to this problem, mainly in the reviews at Newegg. Have others experienced this problem and how did you solve it? I thought about holding the parts of the front plate together with tape but am concerned about this for two reasons: (a) it isn't pretty, and (b) the device can get quite hot and the plastic tape may not be sufficiently heat resistant.

Any advice concerning this problem is welcome.

Re: Vibrating front plate

Inside the front plate of my DNS-323 are four arches of metal.  These metal
'springs' push against the ends of the two hard drives.  You can -- gently --
squeeze the ends of the springs to increase the arch.  This would force the
front plate away from the drives and (hopefully) stop the rattling.

Re: Vibrating front plate

Bending these metal parts to increase the pressure on the front plate was one of the things I tried but it did not make much of a difference. I may try to slide some kind of padding behind the metal plate on the inside of the front cover but cannot think of an appropriate material. Are there any recommendations for the kind of material I could use?

Re: Vibrating front plate

I had the same thing on a USB drive enclosure. I used a candle to run along the seams that touch when it vibrates. Stopped the problem. (Soap works as well.)

If it's bad I'd take it a part and either tighten or bend as suggested. If it's just a small gap issue try the candle. The wax will "fill" the space and stop the vibration. Works great for stuck drawers and windows, after you open and apply the candle.

Re: Vibrating front plate

As much as I thought it was the front plate that was vibrating on mine, it was actually the drives themselves. Manipulating the front plate up or down did temporarily quiet it, but it would start again yeah.

My simple fix: turn it on its side. No more buzzing. smile

Re: Vibrating front plate

If you turn the device on its side isn't there a danger of overheating because the fan opening is now at the center of the case and no longer at the top?

Re: Vibrating front plate

To bring this thread to a conclusion, I thought that turning the device on its side was a good idea but I was concerned about reduced air flow and possible overheating. I am keeping the DNS-323 in a shelf and ended up wedging it into a corner, so that the side of the shelf is pushing against the front plate. Now there is no more vibration and the device is whisper quiet. Problem solved.
