I'm not at home to look at the web setup pages for the 323, however there is a /web/log.conf file which contains the options "SYSTEM" & "EMAIL" , both are set to 0 (off) for me so I can't search for the logs - they should really be kept in /var/log/ but who knows, DLink might want them on the HDDs due to space restrictions. Anyway, the fact that the log.conf file exists would make me think you can setup logging without the need for external software. However, you want some software to make the logs more readable, try a google search for linux log formatter or parser - I'm sure there's loads out there.

i agree with the majority about your statement.. it is possible that he/she is not well versed in english (as this 323 is available beyond english speaking countries) and babblefish sometimes does a good translation, sometimes not

Hi marca, Excellent answer.  I'd like to learn more about it. 
Which version/implementation of syslogd is that as I can't find the -O switch documented? 
When I Google syslogd, I only find variations on

syslogd [ -a socket ] [ -d ] [ -f config file ] [ -h ] [ -l hostlist ] [ -m interval ] [ -n ] [ -p socket ] [ -r ] [ -s domainlist ] [ -v ] [ -x ]

I can't seem to find the -O switch referenced anywhere.

Note that this version of syslogd ignores /etc/syslog.conf.

Options:
        -n              Run as foreground process
        -O FILE         Use an alternate log file (default=/var/log/messages)
        -l n            Sets the local log level of messages to n
        -S              Make logging output smaller
        -s SIZE         Max size (KB) before rotate (default=200KB, 0=off)
        -b NUM          Number of rotated logs to keep (default=1, max=99, 0=purge)
        -R HOST[:PORT]  Log to IP or hostname on PORT (default PORT=514/UDP)
        -L              Log locally and via network logging (default is network only)
        -C[size(KiB)]   Log to a shared mem buffer (read the buffer using logread)

If i turn this on does it make the nas323 never go into idlemode?

Ive turned it on but dont get any log when i connect with ftp, just some "cron.notice crond[1431]: USER root pid 3358 cmd /usr/sbin/getdhcp&" messages every 10th minute as you say, hmm whats wrong?
