Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.

I investigated mounting a USB HDD enclosure about six months ago and was scared off even by the Dummies guide. The need for adding extra usb storage wasn't imminent anyway so I never investigated further.
Well I need it now!! I was kinda hoping that someone had automated the whole process by now. ie. merely FTP some files across, run it and bingo, all set up, just attach your drive. I take it that is not the case. Is the dummy guide in the wiki up to date? Looks like I'll have to start really reading the guide....and reading....and re-reading.....and... Like I said, even the dummy guide is double dutch to me!! Is there any risk to the 1tb of data already on the DNS323 when I install all these funplugs and telnet programs and files and then finally the actual usb enclosure?
Thanks in advance

It's really not that hard - even when you insist on building your own fun_plug like I did.
Here's where DNS-323 Talker and I fumble out way through doing it - with explanations of what and why.

Another thing you will want to consider, is how you are going to partition
and format your USB HDD. Specifically, what file system you want to use.
I believe there is still a limitation, that there are no modules available to
allow the DNS-323 to write to NTFS formated drives.
