DNS-323 Wake-on-LAN (WOL) 2008 Thread

Hi y'all,

I did a search on this topic on the forum, but results were inconclusive. Some posts sounded like it is possible, some like it isn't.

So, what's the definite answer here?

For me, the DNS-323 is almost the perfect NAS device right now, except the missing WOL function.

Can it be done somehow? Has anyone analyzed the hardware if it is in principle possible - e.g. using fun_plug - to power down the device into a state which still supports WOL, instead of powering down completely?

I used my router for this but just returned due to crappy firmware. (WRT350N)
DD-WRT ins't ready for the new gigabit devices yet...to buggy...and no one else has it down yet either from my two weeks of searching and testing.

What would make it a feature you would want on your NAS device, if you don't mind my asking?

Energy preservation. I am often travelling around the world, but would still like to have access to all my data at home. So, my internet router and a very small, low-power embedded PC is running all the time.

But there is no need to have my NAS devices up and running all the time. So, it would be nice if I could simply log on to my embedded PC, send a wake-on-lan packet to my NAS, get/store the files I want, and power down the NAS again.

Thank you KRH.

Too bad it doesn't work... I guess I'll have to wait for the next generation of NAS devices to lower my CO2 emissions... ;-)

One thing to consider is to fun_plug and use a USB key for all logging and other temporary data on the DNS-323.  This way you can at least allow access but make sure all the disks in the DNS-323 are fully spun down except when you're actually retrieving/storing user data.  Here's some threads that discuss this:
