Unfortunately no one can be told what fun_plug is - you have to see it for yourself.

Am I screwed?

I have a DNS323 funplug'd.  Today, I noticed that it was not coming up in my network directory.  So, I rebooted it.  When it came up, I went to the admin web page, and it's asking me to format the drives.  Can't get to any of the other admin pages.

What just happened?  Am I screwed?  What should my next steps be?

Thanks,

William

Re: Am I screwed?

After installing fun_plug I was never asked to format my drives. I did have this happen on two or three firmware upgrades.

Are you still using the stock firmware? Was the device rebooted reciently without this message poping up? Have you made any other changes recently with out rebooting, including a firmware update?

Sorry, but without more details it's no different than bring your car in and saying it's making a noise...fix it. Let us know the steps and details prior to your issue.

Re: Am I screwed?

I knew I would probably need to supply more info... :-)

Fun plug was installed a few months ago.  It's been running fine until last night.  I had made no changes whatsoever.

The symptom that I experienced was that they disappeared from my network list.  I checked on multiple computers, and they were gone.  When I attempted to connect to the admin web page, it did not come up.  When I attempted to telnet, it came back connection refused.  So, I rebooted.  When it came back, it now shows up in my network list, and I can connect to it using defined usernames and passwords.  But, Volume_1 is not listed.  When I go to the admin page, it logs in, then starts the "Wizard" that wants me to format the drives.

Hopefully that helps.

Any next steps or best practices would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Re: Am I screwed?

Ok.  I have an update.

I was able to login via the Admin interface, then manually enter the URL for the main menu.  Under Status > Device Information there is nothing listed in the Hard Drive Information section.  Hrm.  Should there be items listed there, even if they are not formatted?  What is the probability that the hard drives both crashed, versus the DNS323 wigging out?  Or, do I need to format before I will see anything in this section?

Thanks for any feedback.

Re: Am I screwed?

ouch...

Okay, first thing is what version of firmware is on it now and when, if at all, did you change firmware? (I only recall two versions asking me to format the drives again before I started waiting for reports that this no longer occured.)

Have you removed and re-inserted the drives to ensure connections are good? (Had an issue were I lost one drive when moving the device to a new location.)

After checking connections power off, start again and see if all is well. We don't know if it's a drive issue or device issue yet so standard trouble shooting is the best way to start this unless you know what to skip ahead to.

We'll go from here when you have some replies.

Re: Am I screwed?

1.03, and I updated it a few months ago.  I'll go reset and report back.

Re: Am I screwed?

Wow.  Interesting.  Ok, so the volume is back after reseating the drives.  Whew.

Now the question is, how did that happen?  Did something lose connection?

Zen Seeker.  THANKS!

Re: Am I screwed?

And, is that a common problem?  Or, should I be worried about something more "sinister"?

Re: Am I screwed?

These drives just float in the space, no screws. It's not a big deal and I only thought of it because I've banged things around in the past. If it happens again on it's own return it for a new box but I would think it's a one time issue unless you travel with it.

Glad it worked out!
