Main Page Talk

Since regular users can't modify Main Page then here is the right place where you can point out some Main Page mistakes or suggestions how to improve it ^_^

Would it be possibe to remove the help text for DNS, which in this case i a part of the product name and not Domain Name Server.

Also, can we rename the “How-to fun_plug” to something more informative, e.g. “Howto Hack” or something more appropriate. A user entering for the first time will look for “hack” and doesn't have a clue what the fun_plug is,

Instead of

[[http://en.wikipedia.org/xxx|xxx]]'' use ''[[wp>XXX|XXX]]

Hardware Specifications: i would suggest to show also average values of powerconsumption for this embedded device. thats seems an important infomation for comparison of embedded linux nas-devices (to me).

look here: http://forum.dsmg600.info/t155-Power-usage.html

i was bored while watching my DNS-323 sit there.
So I thought I see how much power it really uses.
Pulled these from my UPS monitoring software, seems fairly consistant on a number of runs.

This is with two Seagate 320gb drives.

off 0 watts (ya think?)
Initial boot, pre-disk spinup 16 watts
Initial boot disk spinup 63 watts
Idle with disk spinning 16 watts
Web access 16 watts (no change from idle)
reading/writing files 31-39 watts variable
printing small files 16 watts (no change from idle)
printing large files 31 watts (spool to disk?)
Idle w/ disk in power save 8 watts

DLINK DNS-323 it Conceptronic CH3SNAS?

Link added and its a clone device — sala 2007/10/17 14:55

Consider updating the memory section on the main page. I looked it up at Nanya and it should be 2 X 256 MB NT5DS16M16CS-6K chips (each chip is 16 X 16 MB) – Also the link on the memory is dead.

The optware discussion could use a howto page, anyone agree?

Suggestion for update of the specs on the main page:

The DNS-321 should be mentioned near the top of the main page, with an external link to: http://www.dlink.com/DNS-321/. – Bering, July 2009

Some notes on how to get iptables to function: http://wiki.dns323.info/talk:wiki:user:butibum

This could form the basis of a new howto? – Martin, June 2009

yes, it is — sala 2009/12/04 12:32

Maybe mention that even though it looks like a toaster, its two slots are not intended for bread? – Rye, Nov 2009

Well, 88F5181 cpu can go up to pretty high temperatures. — sala 2009/12/04 12:33

New suggestions

new suggestions go down here.

2011-03-07: Broken link for the CPU needs updating. New link here: http://www.marvell.com/company/news/press_detail.html?releaseID=544

Add visibly on the main page something like this: Warning, DNS-323 models currently sold (hardware revision C1) can't be modified to use most custom firmwares presented in this wiki.

There are three new Firmwares available: 1.07, 1.08, and v1.09. Could someone please update the start page? The spec of v1.08 is as follows:

Firmware specs: 1.08, Bootloader: (unknown, how can this be evaluated? By serial only?), Kernel: Linux- 2.6.12.6 (unchanged), C library: 0.9.28 (unchanged), Busybox: v1.12.1, Samba: 3.0.24 (unchanged). Major new features: ext3 and add-ons (nfs etc)

Option chart updates would be great :)

v1.09 is a Canada/USA release only, adding just an online backup service; and is using a new compression method to make the firmware smaller.

The new compression is expected to be used with v1.10 (a world wide release expected to be released before 2011) to allow for more add-ons.

Suggestion for update of the specs on the main page:

Anyone care to give the latest version a try and update the table?

For firmware version 1.09 & 1.10b07: #smbd -V : Version 3.0.24 #uname -r : 2.6.12.6-arm1 -Zeke_D (2011-07-08)

REMOTE SHUTDOWN OF THE NAS: (WIN)

to shutdown the drive or see status (space and temperature), i prefer using a Widget for Vista/Win7 Toolbar. Downloadlink: http://philwigglesworth.net/BlogEngine.NET/post/2008/10/06/DNS-323-Windows-Vista-Gadget.aspx
