Has anyone seen this message in dmesg?
I am using firmware 1.04.

Hello,
I apologise beforehand if I had not read the other thread fully, but nobody seems to have explained how to get rid of this obsolete MD ioctl reported by dmesg. I am running latest 1.04 firmware from DLINK ftp site and disks are configured as RAID1.

It seems that there are different kernel versions used in 1.04, but it would be good if other people on both 1.04 or otherwise could post the output of 'uname -a' to verify this is the case.

Result of my uname -a is 2.6.12.6-arm1 #29 Thu Dec 27 09:59:48 CST 2007 armv5tejl unknown and this was obtained from DLINK ftp site, also same as b84 from German DLINK site.

hmmm, i don't think its kernel related, or even DNS-323 specific...

it's ioctl, not ictl. ioctls provide an interface to kernel functions and parameters.
what's the version of the mdadm program and when was it released?

My firmware info says Current Firmware Version: 1.04; Firmware Date: 01/10/2008. It is same binary as 1.04b82. This must mean they decided to backtrack? I wonder why.
Jaya
Edit: if you check ftp://ftp.dlink.com/GPL/DNS-323, mdadm version is listed as 2.5.6 -- strange!

I am also seeing "kernel: md: mdadm(pid xxx) used obsolete MD ioctl, upgrade your software to use new ictls." in dmesg and kern.log after upgrading to 1.04. This isn't a huge problem for me except that 1) I hate unexplained errors and 2) it's preventing the drives from going to sleep because it's writing the error every 5 minutes.
I can work around #2 by sending md.* to /dev/null on syslogd.conf, but I'd still like to know what's causing it and how to prevent it.

This does not sound right to me. I have messages "HD1/2 standby now!" amidst mdadm messages. So I suspect mdadm messages cannot be preventing your disk from spinning down.

I also do get quite a lot of mdadm messages and my drives do go to sleep. Wonder what's the cause for those messages though...

Since I posted the URL, it seems the FTP site is no longer accessible to the public. Has anyone got any idea if D-LINK is working on next version of firmware? I hope they are as there are still heaps of outstanding problems.

D-Link is planning on releasing 1.05 pretty soon. One of the imrovements that I'm aware of is the addition of BitTorrent to scheduled downloads part of UI. Not sure when 1.05 will be released, but they promised that it would take less time when it did for 1.04...

Wonder if any beta's are available for checking out yet.

I think the URL is just broken (or got broken by the forum software - , has got tagged on the end),
ftp://ftp.dlink.com/GPL/DNS-323/ works OK for me ...
The file dates are all 01/02/2008 - has anything changed recently??

Hi to everyone.
I had the same problem. After applying the lastest firmware available 1.04 in spain DLINK website 1.04b84, this kind of messages started. Obviously my RAID1 unit was degraded? I don't know why but after the reconstruction, I detected that Hard disk 0 never goes to sleep, hard disk 1 does.
I reverted to a previous beta firwmare NAS202B_DLINKEu_DNS323.1.04b21(1.04.0608.2007), that I used to test BT downloading and this kind of messages are dissapeared and both dirvers goes to sleep in the scheduled time.
The version of mdadm is v2.2 - 5 December 2005???? So I don't think that this could be the problem. So if you want to eliminate this messages and drives spin down stay at version 1.03.
I think this problem is related to RAID 1 configurations, anyone can confirm this?
For information only I've found in a german forum that the CH3SNAS from conceptronic has released a new firmware that solves an issue with the spinning down of one drive in RAID 1. Maybe Dlink is working on and the 1.05 firmware can resolve this.
http://www.dl-support.de/forum/viewtopi … 2f020b7a02
and the text mentioned:
Fixed: HDD1 unable to sleep in Raid1 mode
Best regards

I have been trying to nail this problem down too but with limited success.
Firstly, in my case, there have been few instances when I noticed the switch light illuminated. Each time I noticed this, I logon using TELNET, and notice that one of the disks (that actually has entered standby mode) spinning up.
Then I logoff immediately. Within 10 minutes (my sleep time), the switch light goes off. I check using TELNET and see both disks have entered standby mode.
Now this problem of the light not going off appears to occur only after I play a movie from the DNS-323. I use VLC. So it seems that when a large file (mp4) is accessed for extended periods (for more than an hour), the disk spin down process gets confused and spins down one disk but not the other, and forgets to turn off the blue light.
Comments anyone?
