Upnp, easysearch, firmware 1.05 and more !

Hi all,

Just got a DNS323 to use as a raid1 backup device and media streamer. I have a Zensonic z500 medi streamer which is excellent and streams well from my main pc which is running twonky. I'd like to stream even when that PC is off so figured the upnp server in the dns323 should handle it. Thing is , the media player sees the DNS but doesnt see anything in the folders. Works fine with the PC , as I mentioned.

Second thing, I had to go directly to the IP of the NAS to set it up as the easysearch would not find the unit under any circumstances. i tried with three separate pc's, evn had them wired into the router but nothing. typing the NAS ip address directly into a browser works fine. I canät figure that one out.

I've installed firmware 1.05 but as I understand I canät get a bittorrent client installed without going throgh easyshare. What can I do.

Last problem, I have the drives set to spin down after 30 minutes inactivity. The thing is, when I map a network drive under Win XP, it becomes disconneted after a while. I have azureus set to move the downloaded BT files to the NAS upon completion but this fails as the drive is disconnected. Anyone know how to get around this so the drives spin down but the network drive mapping stays awake?

I see things get pretty technical around here with the hacking of the unit so I will get the basics working first before diving into the deeper hacks.

Thanks for any help.

Re: Upnp, easysearch, firmware 1.05 and more !

I suspect you may have a network problem of some sort - I've had my unit over a year and I can state with confidence that when the drives spin down the drive mappings are not lost, any attempt to access the drive whilst it's in lower power mode simply results in a brief delay whilst it spins up.  In theory, your application could time out whilst waiting for the drive to respond, but I don't think that is what is happening.

Try transferring large files back and forth and see if the connection breaks under load.

Re: Upnp, easysearch, firmware 1.05 and more !

You mentioned having to use the ip address to set it up.  Are you refering to getting to the web utility, or when setting us the mapped network drive?  If your issue is with mapping, are the DNS and your computers in the same workgroup?  Windows can be finiky that way.

Also, you can add the DNS' server name and ip address to your hosts file on each computer.  It is located in the c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc directory.  This should take care of the issue of needing the IP address instead of the units name.

One other thing to remember.  When mapping, right click on your 'my computer' icon and select 'map network drive' to map the drive on XP.  Before you hit 'finish', hit the link for logging on as another user and put in your login info info.

If you just hit finish and it prompts for a login and password, it doesn't always work and the login might be timing out, dropping your connection after a while.  I cannot say for sure.

As far as bittorent instalation without easyshare, check out this forum: http://dns323.kood.org/forum/t2253-1.05 … using.html

Re: Upnp, easysearch, firmware 1.05 and more !

Thanks. As for entering the "logon as different user" info, my main pc has no password, it's XP with administrator and no pass so it boots automatically. Should I still enter the new logon info ?

Re: Upnp, easysearch, firmware 1.05 and more !

That has nothing to do with your PC, the "logon as different user" send the entered login information to the remote share, in this case the DNS-323.  It needs to be a valie username and password on the DNS, not the PC.
