Big big bigggggggggg problem

Hi everybody,

Guess what! I can't access my DNS-323 anymore and I don't know what to do. Here is what I did:

This afternoon, I noticed different errors in dmesg and I decided to install cleanboot to solve the unmounting problem already reported in the forum. Back home, I rebooted to check the dmesg log. I saw the same unmounting-related errors. I decided to do a e2fsck on the partitions in order to correct the problem. I see that /mnt/HD_a2, /mnt/HD_a4 and /mnt/HD_b4 are ext2 filesystem. (dah!)

umount /mnt/HD_a4
umount /mnt/HD_b4
e2fsck /dev/sda4
e2fsck /dev/sdb4

There were errors, asked to correct them, yes, corrected. Happy.

Now, I think about /mnt/HD_a2 which is /dev/md0. I run e2fsck /dev/md0 and I think "whoooops was not unmounted".... So I CTRL+C while it was 'checking filesystem'. Finally, e2fsck says "ERROR". Glurp.

There is still a /ffp link, but there is nothing pointing to it. So it is impossible to change directory to /ffp. Everything seems to be wiped out. I rebooted because I thought this may be a sort of freak error or whatever.

After reboot, can't connect to ssh, telnet, ftp, nfs. Glurp, glurp.

Webs? Can access. The admin password is the same (valid /etc/password ?) In the status tab, it says everything is OK, half space used (nice... now can I get my stuff? haha)

My users don't even appear in the USERS list for ftp. I added a user, gave it a password, but can't log in with ftp (and yes, the ftp server is running).

Gluuuuuuurp. I used to have a lot of torrents seeding, but now, the lights are blue-steady. Dead DNS-323.

Anyone has a suggestion (besides formating the drives and start over)....?

Thanks,

Re: Big big bigggggggggg problem

If you want to get your data off before deciding the next step, you can pull the drives out of the powered down dns-323 (make sure you remember which bay that each drive comes from, or pull one at a time) and connect them to another computer running linux (mount them as ext2 fs) or a windows system using the installable ext2 fs driver http://www.fs-driver.org/ then copy what you need to a new drive.

Re: Big big bigggggggggg problem

OK. Do I have to connect both of them to another computer or just one is enough? If I need to plug the two of them, how do I manage to mount the /mnt/HD_a2 partition to the new box, since there are 2 disks?

Just one.  Remember a raid 1 array is 2 identical mirrors.

Re: Big big bigggggggggg problem

Ok, nice. Is there anything else I can do to avoid this? If I reset to factory defaults, what will that do? Will it keep my data?

What about e2fsck on a mounted partition?

Re: Big big bigggggggggg problem

Yes to the reset.

No to the e2fsck on a mounted partition

hehe, short answers wink

When i e2fsck'ed /mnt/HD_a4 and /mnt/HD_b4, it asked to correct errors.. And I said yes for both. For /dev/md0, it was "checking filesystem", while I pressed CTRL+C (I never said yes to correct any errors).. Anybody knows why I have that kind of problem? What did e2fsck do exactly?!

If I reset to factory defaults, what will that do? I don't care about "reconfiguring" my DNS-323, as long as I keep my data safe on disks.

Re: Big big bigggggggggg problem

Oh, an other question comes to my mind. How do I check /dev/md0 for errors?!

I saw those in dmesg, corrected them on /mnt/HD_a4, /mnt/HD_b4.. Apparently, I can't do that while /dev/md0 is mounted... haha neutral

Is there a way to force a check that partition at reboot? Any other way?

Thanks,

Ok, thanks.

So, if I reset to factory defaults, what will that do?

Re: Big big bigggggggggg problem

Well, will my data be safe? Will I be able to log in via ftp and send fun_plug.tgz, fun_plug? Does it reformat? What does the reset function do?!

Re: Big big bigggggggggg problem

the "restore to factory defaults" in the web panel, or the reset button on the back will reset the configuration info entered via the web interface, the data will still be on the disks, but then you may be prompted to set up the disks again - in which case don't accept that option because it will be asking to format your disks (it will ask, it won't just go ahead and do it) - I can't remember, others will be able to tell you better or search this forum for "reset" or "factory defaults" - there must be lots of posts.  If you have reset the unit you may need to use the dlink ez search utility to find the machine again on the network (its available to download from their site if you can't find your original disk, or if you need the latest version).  I would recommend that you pull a drive and back up before you proceed, then you at least know your data is safe (subject to your backup media not dying on you :-) ).  I think, and I hope that others will correct me if I am wrong, that if you reset, then the unit will not know what your current drive configuration is (which may be the case now), and therefore, while you may be able to enable ftp, you won't be able to upload as the unit won't know the disk config.  There are posts on the forum (with scripts) about breaking and recreating raid setups, but you will need telnet access to run them  ....

Re: Big big bigggggggggg problem

Okay, allright. I have most of my data on an other server at home, so I will pull out a drive from the DNS-323, mount it, sync it to the other server, reset & reformat the whole thing just to make sure.

I'll do that tonight and I'll keep you posted.

Re: Big big bigggggggggg problem

Hi again,

I was able to mount /mnt/HD_a2 (/dev/sdc2) to my desktop, so I can copy my data over. I checked ffp.log... Looks scary..:

**** fun_plug script for DNS-323 (2008-04-13 tp@fonz.de) ****
Mon Aug 18 18:14:58 GMT 2008
ln -snf /mnt/HD_a2/ffp /ffp
/ffp/etc/rc: Not found or not executable
**** fun_plug script for DNS-323 (2008-04-13 tp@fonz.de) ****
Mon Aug 18 18:24:06 GMT 2008
ln -snf /mnt/HD_a2/ffp /ffp
/ffp/etc/rc: Not found or not executable
**** fun_plug script for DNS-323 (2008-04-13 tp@fonz.de) ****
Mon Aug 18 18:55:13 GMT 2008
ln -snf /mnt/HD_a2/ffp /ffp
/ffp/etc/rc: Not found or not executable

Freak isn't it! The directory /mnt/HD_a2/ffp has been deleted for some reason.. and other stuff that I had under /mnt/HD_a2 has been deleted as well....... Anyways, I am backuping my stuff before doing any reset or whatever.

Re: Big big bigggggggggg problem

I assume that you have seen that the ffp directory isn't on the disk (the rc error doesn't necessarily mean that there is no ffp directory) as you also say that you have some other data loss.  You may want to consider after you have got your data off whether you want another raid1 setup or 2 individual disks which are semi or fully manually mirrored - there are lots of posts on the forum about that and some info on the wiki about this.  I use raid1, and am, as I type, running e2fsck on a raid1 setup on the dns323 using the e2fsck fonz has provided - see http://www.inreto.de/dns323/fsck/
using this you don't get complaints about the volumes being mounted (note the choice of script which runs it depends on which shell you are using).  Also, you don't need ffp to telnet into the box - on the telnet 'how to' on the wiki, there is an archive which only contains a telnet deamon and busybox, which you can use to get in and see what is happening with ffp (or anything else).  I have them both installed, so if I screw up the ffp, then I just switch the ffp fun_plug with the telnet-only fun_plug reboot and then you are back in without having to reinstall ffp etc.

Re: Big big bigggggggggg problem

Cool, thanks lu.

Finally, I copied my stuff over my desktop, and put back the disk in the DNS-323. Reconfigured the admin interface, while the disks were synchronizing. Overall, I lost a couple of directories, nothing very important.

Thanks for you help, all.
