apache2 on dns323? anybody got it to work?

Hi,
Has anybody got Apache2 working on the dns323?  I have installed 2.2.9-1 from optware.  Configured it, error log shows no problems (even when set to debug), netstat -a shows
Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address           Foreign Address         State
tcp        0      0 0.0.0.0:8000            0.0.0.0:*               LISTEN
8000 is the port I have configured it for, but I get nothing at all when accessing the server, also when I telnet to the box on port 8000 and issue a GET / or GET /index.html there is no response whatsoever, whereas doing the same on port 80 gets a response from GoAhead.  PS shows 7 entries for "/mnt/HD_a2/ipkg/opt/sbin/httpd -k start" - one for root and the rest for nobody.  There is free memory on the box and I kill stuff like smb, ssh, ntp before I try this.  I am doing all of this over a lan connected via router (not from outside), and have tried browsers on windows and linux machines to access it.  Has anybody got this (or any version of apache to work)?
Thanks
lu
