DNS 323 as local drive over internet
Is there a way to setup the DNS 323 so that we could use a folder on the LAN for our web files AND also open this shared folder up so that someone remotely can see this folder as their local directory in an FTP/SFTP program? The idea is the off site person would work on the files on the DNS and then upload them to a web server at a data center. Basically, we want on-site staff and off-site staff to work on files within that shared folder. Can this be done and is the most secure way to do this?

have you considered a vpn? Search the forum for vpn or openvpn (which has various levels of security & encryption depending on how you set it up).

I use a Linksys RV040 VPN Router very sucessfully for doing exactly this. I have the ability to have multiple IP addresses, so I use the VPN router as a VPN connection only and do all my outbound traffic via another router.

Is there a way to set this up without installing a fun plug or using telnet? We need a dummies solution here. What about VPN from the outside into a Vista machine and somehow map the specified folder for use? Would that be possible?

You can create the VPN any way you want - once you have VPN access to the network it is pretty much as if you were directly attached, only slower.
As bq041 has mentioned, he uses the Linksys RV040 VPN router, I have used a Netgear FVS124G and also Microsoft's pptp VPN that is built into Windows Server 2003.
I haven't worked with setting up VPNs connected to Windows desktops (only from desktops) and I'm not certain what options you have, it may be easier to do it to your router - VPN endpoints are common on business grade routers and are also offered on many consumer routers.

would work for your needs. I've not tried this service, but I know two people who use it,
and are quite happy with this soultion.
I use a Linksys RVL200 for VPN access to my home network, which works great for me.

I have installed MySecureShell and open-ssh under etch on the dns323. Having this, I can connect directly from the internet with SSH/SFTP client Konqueror on Linux (maybe WinSCP/FileZilla on Windows would do the same???). Files appear in Konqueror like in a standard file browser. No need for vpn stuff.
