Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

Just setup two seagate 1.5TB drives as RAID-0 with firmware 1.06b65  and jumbo (9k) frames.
All working well, now loading up my files.

Thanks to the info on this forum for helping configure the box...

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

NB for Raid1 users.

Using redudancy (=RAID1) is really usefull if you use 2 differents models of hard-drive.

When you have 2 HD of the same model (bought the same time at the same reseller) the probability simutaneous failure is really higher than if they are completely different.

This priciple is widely used, not only about HDs but on every systems that need redudancy whereas it is for safety or robustness of the system.

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

I have two WD 1T drives. WD1001FALS, running in a RAID1 configuration.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001C271MA

Had I seen the note below, I probably would have used two different drives, however.  And I may be switching from RAID1 to individual drive setups with an automatic backup instead of the RAID1..

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

I have just purchased 2xWD WD10EADS and wonder if I should bother with the TLER settings?

Is anyone running these drives with the NAS and in RADI1 and with stock firmware settings?

I can also report success with the Seagate 1.5TB ST31500341AS on firmware 1.05, format took 23 minutes(was hanging at 94% for quite some time).

The Hitachi 1TB drives work if you install the 1.06 firmware update. I have them setup as RAID-1.

Hitachi 7K1000.B Hard Drive - 1TB, 7200RPM, 16MB, SATA-300, OEM (From tigerdirect.com they are $90 each now).

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

Tested new Seagate 7200.12 1TB disks ST31000528AS FW CC34.
These disks have only 2 plates and higher density, so have less vibration and are more faster.

Box fw1.06 and RAID1 config, formating without problem.

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

I'm using a pair of Western Digital Caviar Green 1TB drives (Model WD10EAVS). They are a bit slower than a pair of Seagate Barracuda drives that I had in there (which I think has to do with the 8MB cache that's on those drives), but they are almost silent. They seem to work fine.

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

Well, finally came around to get my hands on two Western Digital WD15EADS-00R6B0 and the drives worked without any issues with firmware 1.07; set up the drives with RAID1. Upgraded to firmware 1.08beta and re-formated the drives with EXT3 and re-configured the network shares and started to restore backups from the old drives. So far everythings works out as it should and no problem at all.

Edit: Asked earlier about mentioned drive without getting feedback.

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

I bought a HDD Maxtor 1000 GB. Before to insert the hdd I upgraded to firm 1.08beta. I insert the hdd 1000 Gb, login to the web. It's ask me to format the new hdd. I had a problem, the nas don't want to format. I downgrade to 1.07 firmware, now the hdd can be formated and then i upgraded to 1.08b. In status tab, the HDD is saw like:

Seagate     STM31000528AS     9VP00ED8     1000 G

Strange!

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

● Two Western Digital WD10EADS Caviar Green 1TB SATA HDDs (OEM)
● DNS-323, H/W vB1, F/W v1.06
● RAID 1, 998 GB, 94% format progress problem* but appears to have been successful after a Restart

*Read my experience with the 94% problem, here: http://dns323.kood.org/forum/viewtopic. … 203#p30203

Western Digital WD10EADS (I paid $98.99 CAD ea.) at NCIX:
http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=35676 … gital%20WD

I just got off the phone with 'Chris' at D-Link Tech Support (1-800-361-5265) to report the 94% problem and, for what's it's worth, he told me that the 'Green' Western Digital HDDs that I bought are more reliable than the 'Black' version, which was what I almost bought.

I chose the 'Green' version over the 'Black' version based on the advice of NCIX, who said that the 'Green' runs at 5,400 rpm (vs. 7,200 rpm) and has only one controller (vs. two controllers) and will a) run cooler, b) quieter, and c) is more reliable.  Plus, I saved about $10 CAD ea. by choosing 'Green' over 'Black'.

After my first 12 hours with this rig, it is quieter than the mini PC that's parked next to it; I would say this setup is very quiet.  I have it situated immediately below my HDTV.  The only problem now is to figure out what to do about those bright, blue LEDs on the front!

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

Hi res,

the FW version 1.08 is addressing the problem of the bright LEDs. According to the release notes there is a switch (in the web interface) that enables you to turn it off.
Anyhow, the FW version 1.08 is in beta state and is not (yet) recommended to be used in a non-test environment.

BTW, 1.08 also supports the Western Digital "Green" 2TB disks, though there are no reports of anyone using this setup.

Kind regards,
Bernhard

Re: What SATA hard drives have been tested with the DNS-323?

2x 1TB WD Caviar Black (WD1001FALS) on DNS-323 v1.07 without issues.

Sustained transfer speed is ~17MB/sec, so really the Blacks are a little overkill. Not noisey, if anything my roommates 7200.11 pair is much noisier.

Keep in mind that the Caviar Green drives go to 'sleep' after a few seconds of not being used. If you're using your DNS-323 to stream large HD files, the drive may go to sleep and take a moment to recover/rebuffer. Not only would that be highly annoying, but the drives are only rated for X amount of store cycles or whatever.. Came across this complaint somewhere, I don't have the link handy.
