New DNS-323, lots of success, some frustration

Greetings to all,

Very nice forum here.  And a huge thanks for all the work done by fonz and others, and the willingness to share.  Now, if I may share what I've done, where I'd like to go, and ask what do I need to learn / do.

I recieved my DNS-323 from Newegg last Wednesday, and installed a used flea-bay 160 gig drive for testing purposes.  Upgraded to F/W 1.06 from 1.04 it came with.  I got fun_plug 0.5 up and running the first night.  ssh setup for root login with password next.  Excellent!  The tutorials are great!  Then went for private/public key login with ssh.  Done.  Then, I got the fanctl up and running.  Very nice.  Now lets setup a share for the router.  Hmmm, no worky.  Lots of reading (google is my friend).  Found the issues with share level.  Then got sloppy with the samba.conf, and locked myself out.  Ok, lets start over and reload, making a few changes to my directory structure.  Also reflashed to new beta code 1.08.  Got everything back where I had been and retried the CIFS share for my WRT54GL running Tomato.  It works now!  Something in the new beta code.  This cronicles my successes.

My failures, and where I'd like to go...

There is a small perl script (pixelserv.pl) I run on my NSLU2 Slug running Unslung that servers up a small 1x1 green box stating "File not found on this Server".  This is used with my ad blocking scripts running on the router.  It replaces the "Web page not found" error seen where an ad would be displayed.  Instead, I get the upper left corner of the "webs service" admin login screen.  Weird!  The webs server is intercepting the call for pixelserv.pl.  It would be great to get this working, but I'm thinking it may nerver work as the webs service is not configurable by us.  Input is greatly welcomed.  My other option here is to run the perl script on my PCs, which will work.  It's just not as elegant.

Next...  I searched high and low, and can find no one that has set up the more robust version of syslogd for capturing logging from a router.  What would I need to do?  Setup to build my own packages?  This is over my head, but anything is learnable.  I would really like to move away from the slug, and have everything on the DNS.  However, I should add, I never got this working on the slug either.  I think I'm in for an education.

I have a 1 TB drive coming tomorrow, and will continue my fun this weekend.  Any comments are welcome.  This may be un-attainable, but I'm still in the hunt.

Thanks much in advance.

Jerry

probably right.  Use lighttdp.sh in /ffp/sart and look at kickwebs.sh.  More info on the wiki how to: ffp

Look at the packages from fonz ...... he builds and packages lots, but the initial install of ffp dowsn't download and install all packages - but there are steps on the wiki how to to download and install them all or just individual packages.  But in this case look at /ffp/start/syslogd.sh :-)

There is also an alternative/competing package system - you may be familiar with optware as you have a slug - optware is also available for the 323
