Hello, I have had the DNS 323 for less than a year now, I have 2x 500 GB Seagate Barracudas installed formated as a raid (cannot remember if it was 1 or 5)
it has been working fine, especially after one of the drives failed and I had it RMA'd
However, just this last week we had this weird power event (no idea if it was a surge, outage, brownout or what). The UPS that my router and modem were plugged into had its breaker flipped (I think).
No computers were damaged, everything in the building, including the DNS-323 is on surge protectors, good ones.
But what is happening now is when I push the power button on the front, the power light flashes blue, and just flashes, I tried leaving it like that for 2 days now, and it is still flashing blue, the hard drive lights are not turning on at all, no amber or blue, just off.
So please help, I really need to get this thing working, we have important files on it and the reason I chose to use RAID was to PROTECT the data against Hard Drive Failure... and I don't have the money to recover the data or go with a redundant server farm... so please help.
I am heading down the the building where the DNS-323 is located so I won't be able to respond to any replies until I get there.
Thanks
Michael Ross

It would help to know exactly what drive configuration you setup - RAID0, RAID1, JBOD or individual disks.
(there is no RAID5 on the DNS-323) and, what firmware are you running?
Something you can try...
1. Take out both drives (label the drives to remember which slot [left/right] they came from) and try to power on the DNS-323
- this may help to diagnose if the DNS-323 power supply is just blown?
The DNS-323 should power up with out disk and the webGUI should be available (try not to change any values in the web gui)
If successful try replacing both drives (be careful to put the disks back into the same slot [left/right] they came from) and power up again.
WARNING!!! - depending on your RAID configuration trying to power up with only one disk or swapping disk locations could corrupt your data.
You may have some data recover options (depending on the RAID configuration you setup)
If RAID1 or individual disks you can mount the drive on another computer using a SATA
controller, USB to SATA adapter cable or USB external hard drive enclosure.
You can use a Linux Live CD such as Knoppix (www.knoppix.org) to boot the computer to
Linux and (hopefully) mount the drives and backup any important data.
Optionally, if you have a WinXP computer you can install an EXT2 filesystem driver (www.fs-driver.org)
to mount the disk and backup.

hello, thank you for your speedy response.
I tried starting the dns without the drives, and it is doing the same thing, should I reset it?
will resetting it make it so I have to re format my drives?
------- UPDATE ------
well, I am sort of in a hurry, so I am going ahead and resetting, if I am unable to use the raid after the reset, I will use your tips for recovering the date then I will re do the raid.
Plus, once this is all dealt with, I read some where that with fun_plug you can use a USB controlled UPS with the DNS-323 and it should work, I tried installing fun_plug and it never worked, it just acted like nothing happened.
at any rate, thanks

well, resetting didn't work, I am thinking that I did it wrong, what are the exact steps for resetting the DNS 323?

if you can get into the web gui there is a factory reset button there, or you can push the pinhole button at the back of the dns323 while powering up the unit (leave it pressed for a while). I would also try and get read only access to one or more of the drives by connecting them directly to a linux installation/live cd on a desktop, or by using the windows ext2 driver (do a search for ext2ifs) and connecting the drives to a windows machine. Note mig's caution about data corruption though.

hello, thank you for your response,
I called d-link and spent over an hour on the phone with them, we figured out that the rom is shot, so they are RMAing it, this sucks.
BUT, when I get a replacement, all I should have to do is update to the latest firmware and put my discs in and it should work, right, the raid should still be intact? or do I need to connect the drives to a computer, backup the data and format the drives again?
Thanks
Mike

The answer to this question (and the success of connecting the drives to a computer for backup) depends
on which RAID configuration the drives were setup in your DNS-323.
If I were in your situation I would definitely make a backup. You can never really be sure how the new
DNS-323 will react (format wise) to your old drives. I've seed postings that it was just plug an play; other
postings http://dns323.kood.org/forum/viewtopic. … 136#p30136 , it formatted the wrong drives.
If your drives were setup as RAID0 (or JBOD, possibly?) you will need to connect both drives (at the same time)
to a Linux computer (or Linux Live Boot CD) and re-assemble the RAID with 'mdadm' commands to make
a backup. Again, knowing the original RAID setup of the drives is very important to determine the correct
procedure to make a backup.

I was using RAID1, and from what I was reading, I can just plug one drive in at a time and be able to access the data using my sata adaptor (I am using a mac mini with windows installed for my desktop, so I need to use one)
Thanks for your help

yes, accessing the raid1 should not be a problem assuming you are booting with linux (you can use a live cd) or another os that supports ext2. Windows does not out of the box - you need to install something like ext2ifs - many people here have reported success with it. I don't know whether macs need a driver or whether there is native os support - I am sure this has been asked on this forum before, so should be easy enough to find.
