DNS-343 and fun-plug - no joy at all

I have a DNS343 with 2 volumes.  It has 4 x 1.5 TB Barracudas, which are mirrored, so there are 2 x 1.5 TB volumes.  According to the front panel display, the firmware version is 1.02.

We have a mess of Macs, so I would like to get NFS and AFP running.  (Even better, I would like to switch of SMB but that can wait.)

I am copying the files using the Mac Finder.

I have read everything I can find on the fun-plugs and everything indicates:
- copy the two files - fun_plug and fun_plug.tgz - to the Volume_1 file system;
- restart the DNS-343, which I am doing through the maintenance page.

I cannot find any information that indicates that the fun_plug script needs to be changed, and there does not seem to be any requirement to unpack the .tgz file.  Just put them in Volume_1 and restart.

Nothing happens.  There is no ffp directory in the Volume_1 directory (well, there is now because I created it just in case, but it is empty) and I cannot telnet in.

I feel like an absolute moron, because the instructions seem so easy - but I guess I must have missed something somewhere.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: DNS-343 and fun-plug - no joy at all

The documented max disk size supported is 1TB. You should also check the supported disks:
ftp://files.dlink.com.au/products/DNS-3 … y_List.pdf

That could be you issue.
also,

New firmware 1.03b60 with 1.5 TB HDD support released by D-Link France

ftp://ftp.dlink.fr/DNS/DNS-343/Firmware … 43.1.03b60

You’ll find also the release notes here:

ftp://ftp.dlink.fr/DNS/DNS-343/Firmware … te_103.TXT

buuut unfortunately can't seem to download it because I don't have a French IP...bugger.

In any case, try with a non-1.5TB disk, see if you can get ffp loaded on that.
All I did with mine was download the fun_plug.tgz and fun_plug file and chuck em on Volume_1

once you have got it working (the unpacking of ffp), check out http://nas-tweaks.net/CH3SNAS:Tutorials/fun_plug for an excellent guide to installing ffp
hope it helps

Re: DNS-343 and fun-plug - no joy at all

http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/FIRMWA … Beta.shtml

Fixes:
¤ BETA Firmware (for testing only)
¤ Add 1.5TB Drive support for Raid configurations.

can't find a direct download from dlink though, use at own risk.

I know KrulL said the 1.03b60 firmware allowed him to install ffp, hoping he still has a copy of it and can share it around for us

Re: DNS-343 and fun-plug - no joy at all

Klaus,
Thanks for your reply.
I hate to think that the disks (which it accepted without any sign of pain) are the problem, because they cost more than the DNS-343, and I would be more likely to eBay the DNS box and keep the disks.  It is working perfectly, if somewhat slowly, and has been for over a month.

Also, my drives are mirrored, so each drive is "only" 1.5 TB.  I was kind of hoping that it would be happy with that because the total size is the same as 4x1GB with raid 5, and each drive is smaller.   Of course hope and computers are a notoriously bad combination.

But you may well be right.  1TB disks looks so small these days (in fact, so do the 1.5s...)  I have one and The Woman has the other.  She would not accept less than 1.2 TB.  Maybe she needs more discipline...:-)

I could try to format them as 1TB and see what happens.  But then I would have to back up all my backups...

I have a suspicion that the 1.03 French special firmware is just correcting some misplaced le/la and acutes and graves.  They are very particular about their spelling, these Frenchmen, savez?

I find it totally bizarre that a system that runs on Linux does not natively do NFS.  What were they thinking?

Thanks again for your advice.
Russ.

McFlyyy,

How much kill?  Total kill or recoverable kill?  Have you managed to unkill it?
Are we talking Delorean-into-the-train kill, or is it just resting?
It is always so much better when this happens to someone else for a change.
The Germans should come up with a nice word like "schadenfreude" which means learning from someone else's pain.

And just let me confirm that you installed the 1.03 firmware, not the 1.02a Beta.
It is no surprise they tested the 1.03 on the French - they have a national style with wounded indignation that is world class.

Ploughguy,
(who wishes to advise that he is only into racial stereotyping when it comes to the fun stuff...)

Re: DNS-343 and fun-plug - no joy at all

I have checked the drive compatibility list from dlink.com.au and it features the 1.5TB Barras at the top of the SATA-2 part of the list.  The 1.02b10 firmware is still the latest release, so I presume it is providing the support.

And I still cannot load the fun-plug.  Bugger.

Re: DNS-343 and fun-plug - no joy at all

I have the DNS343 configured as two petite mirrors of 1.3TB each.  So Volume_1 and Volume_2 are both mirrored.  Does the fun-plug mechanism care about the disk config?  I'd'a thunk that a file system is a file system is a file system, and it should not matter how the volume it is on is implemented.  But one never knows.

I am somewhat eager to get this to work because the performance between the Macs and the DNS-343 stinks - 13MB/sec using SMB and 22MB/sec with FTP on 1GB everything with jumbos on at both ends (and a Procurve 1400-8 in the middle which claims to understand them.  My old lady's backups are taking 20 hours, and I'm copping heat as a result.

I am hoping that AFP might make it a bit more gooder.  But no fun-plug = no AFP = no domestic bliss for Ploughguy.

It must be on /mnt/HD_a2 (internal name), which usually maps to Volume_1 (windows network name). If Volume_1 doesn't work, try Volume_2, etc.

Fonz,
Thanks for your answer.  I have already put the fun-plug on both devices.  Is there any way to see the mount table from outside?

I don't think so, a second problem may be execute permissions. Have you checked that?

Re: DNS-343 and fun-plug - no joy at all

Well roger me senseless.  I have Macs.  I copied the fun-plug files using a windows virtual machine, and Viola, it works.  Clearly Windows is setting the execute bit and OS X does not.  It was the Fonz's mention of execute permission that did it.  Thank you!

You're welcome.

That reminds me of another problem we're seeing here frequently. Safari seems to silently add a '.sh' extension to the fun_plug script. Sure it was the x-bit? wink

Re: DNS-343 and fun-plug - no joy at all

Not the slightest bit sure.

But there was definitely no .sh extension - I copied the files using Finder, which generally does what we expect.  Including, I suspect, not setting an executable bit for what it thinks is an SMB file system because AFAIK they don't normally have one.

Of course, I expect correction on this last point to be swift and merciless!

I am now trying to figure out how to get ipkg to work so I can load Avahi.  The DNS-323 solution does not work.  The DNS-321 version (using glibc?) doesn't work either, but at this point it is not working better than the other one - ldd is, at least, seeing all the libraries.  I am seriously wishing I had bought a Synology box...  It seems to have all this stuff preloaded.  The number of otherwise potentially enjoyable hours that one spends crashing around trying to get this stuff to work is a shocker.  Also, the performance is still revolting, although the smb.conf patch seems to have added about 50% (to about 20MB/sec.)  The missus is trying to access it by WiFi and it is not good at all - 5MB/sec tops.

Hey!

Sorry for the delay. I just recently tracked down the 1.03b60 copy I had on the other Laptop here. I've reposted it here until dlink puts the 1.03 finally out:

http://82.102.87.82/~metacrom/fileadmin … 43.1.03b60

Just to update you folks, I can verify and confirm that fonz' fun_plug works like a charm on this 1.03b60 FW. I haven't had any issues with my 343 since the last time I posted here at this forum -- the only time I had to flash it with a FW other than the 1.02 supplied by Dlink. I have never had any issues, and can confirm that it is stable with fun_plug.

I did find out that 1.03b60 uses a newer kernel:

Code:

/mnt/HD_a2/ffp # uname -a
Linux cthulhu 2.6.22.7 #25 Mon Nov 10 11:46:52 CST 2008 armv5tejl unknown

...and hence I can't use any modules (for usbdrive, etc...), and can't chroot Manuel's Debian like I used to with my previous 323... oh well. Hopefully soon. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated...

I have been using my 343 with my NMT PopcornHour via llink and it's just bliss! 4x1TB WD GreenPower HDDs on RAID5.

If you got any questions, please feel free to leave your query, and I'll try to get back to you the soonest.

Hope this helps.

Re: DNS-343 and fun-plug - no joy at all

KrulL,
I don't want to waste your time.  I'm sure you have people at home for that...

First reference:
=========
If, however, you enjoy a challenge, or you are one of the 10% of us that have Macs, there are instructions here:

http://dns323.kood.org/howto:optware for the DNS-323

Second reference
===========
And there is a discussion on the DNS-321, which wants a different Optware version, here:

http://dns323.kood.org/forum/t3520-Inst … S-321.htm.

Optware delivers stuff that is not included in the fun-plug.  Problem is that it is compiled for the ARM processor but not for DLink DNS specifically, so there are possible environmental issues, in particular, shared library versions.  The DNS323  version of ipkg (from the first reference) does not run on the DNS-343 with 1.02 firmware.  The DNS-321 version has less problems (the ldd test in the second reference above does not report errors) but it still does not work.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to download the DNS323 version of ipkg  as described in the first reference above and see if you can do an "ipkg list".  If that works, then I am switching to 1.03.  If not then I will wait for the non-beta version - no point in adding more degrees of uncertainty...

Ploughguy.

Re: DNS-343 and fun-plug - no joy at all

Hey Plough,

Ran the wiki install cmds and got this in the end..

Code:

/mnt/HD_a2/ipkg # ipkg update
-sh: ipkg: not found

... so wiki install doesn't work.

I went ahead and tried the ipkg suggested in the 2nd reference you pointed out and this is what I got:

Code:

/mnt/HD_a2 # mkdir ipkg
/mnt/HD_a2 # cd ipkg
/mnt/HD_a2/ipkg # wget http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/optware/cs05q3armel/cross/unstable/ipkg-opt_0.99.163-10_arm.ipk
/mnt/HD_a2/ipkg # tar -xzf ipkg-opt_0.99.163-10_arm.ipk
/mnt/HD_a2/ipkg # tar -xzf data.tar.gz
/mnt/HD_a2/ipkg # mkdir -p /opt
/mnt/HD_a2/ipkg # mount --bind /mnt/HD_a2/ipkg/opt /opt
/mnt/HD_a2/ipkg # echo src cs05q3armel http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/optware/cs05q3armel/cross/unstable >> /opt/etc/ipkg.
conf
/mnt/HD_a2/ipkg # ipkg update
Downloading http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/optware/cs05q3armel/cross/unstable/Packages
Updated list of available packages in /opt/lib/ipkg/lists/cs05q3armel
Successfully terminated.
/mnt/HD_a2/ipkg # ipkg list

... Zoom! ...

zip - 2.32-1 - a compression and file packaging utility.
zlib - 1.2.3-3 - zlib is a library implementing the 'deflate' compression system.
zoo - 2.10-1 - zoo - File archiving utility with compression
zsh - 4.3.9-1 - Zsh is a shell designed for interactive use.
Successfully terminated.
/mnt/HD_a2/ipkg #

So It WORKS! big_smile To test if it works:

Code:

/mnt/HD_a2/ipkg # ipkg install mtr
Installing mtr (0.75-1) to root...
Downloading http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/optware/cs05q3armel/cross/unstable/mtr_0.75-1_arm.ipk
Installing ncurses (5.7-1) to root...
Downloading http://ipkg.nslu2-linux.org/feeds/optware/cs05q3armel/cross/unstable/ncurses_5.7-1_arm.ipk
Configuring mtr
Configuring ncurses
update-alternatives: Linking //opt/bin/clear to /opt/bin/ncurses-clear
Successfully terminated.
/mnt/HD_a2/ipkg # mtr google.com

... mtr WORKS! ...

Thanks for the inspiration ploughguy! Since Michael's Debian chroot doesn't work (yet), optware will fill the void for the meantime! Now the question is: what can optware offer me on the 343? wink

Regards,

Re: DNS-343 and fun-plug - no joy at all

Geez, KruiL, you are my hero!
I wonder what is holding them back from un-Beta-ing it?
After I have done my quarterly tax return (to keep me out of jail) installed three copies of SAP Business Connector (to earn the money to pay more tax later) and walked the dogs (to maintain the domestic political balance) i will install 1.03 (to tip the balance a whisker in my favour.)
Thanks for your help.

Re: DNS-343 and fun-plug - no joy at all

This firmware is now available from DLink in Australia (and possibly elsewhere.)

http://www.dlink.com.au/tech/Download/d … e=Firmware

Loading it into my DNS343 with 4 x 1.5TB did _not_ require a disk rebuild - it was exactly as it was before.
The release note in the download area says that this is an interim version.

Re: DNS-343 and fun-plug - no joy at all

Ploughguy has given up on the DNS-343 and moved the school of Barracudas into a Netgear ReadyNAS Pioneer.  This costs about 3 times as much but has everything I need built in - even has settings to create a time machine partition.  It is much faster than the DNS-343, which will be appearing on eBay shortly.
Thanks for those of you who helped my unsuccessful attempts to tame the DNS-343.
