Hi there i am trying to install the alt-f on to a revB Nas i have copied over the funplug file and the Alt-F-<version>.tar to the nas rebooted and i still only get to the original vendor page am i missing something here i do have telnet access but cannot access the alt-f pages

help please

You'll need to put some more info up about what you've done, and the result.

It seems you are using the 'reloaded' technique, but are you running ffp already? You could state which option you are using (1, 2, 3...) from the intallation wiki page).

Then later in the page is some diagnositing by looking at the LED lights, you could comment on that check.

Then there is some stuff about log files (reloaded log and alt-f.log) so you could check those and give the result)

Ok here goes the Wiki says the following

(If you don't have ffp or a fun_plug file in your box root directory, and you don't even know what that means, just download "Alt-F-<version>.tar" and "fun_plug" into your box root directory, make sure that "fun_plug" has execution permission and reboot. )

Did that and rebooted the box becomes unresponsive the blue lights do nothing there is no way to access the box either by ping or telnet or windows explorer i left it for 8 hours thinking it was doing something so i pulled the plug and here is what is in the log file's

I am not able to telnet or ssh at all after unplugging the box i can access the original vendors pages

So you haven't setup up ffp before? it seems you are saying you haven't, so usually you don't usually have telnet access right?

Did you try the holding button down to see if it flashes?

Was there an alt-f.log file?

I'm assuming no alt-f.log, and so the install says most likely problem is there wasn't enough memory.
I have compared your reloaded log and mine and I can see mine has far more memory available., although it looks like the same result from the ps command (i.e which processes are running).
So either you have a dlink office add on running (bonjour or something else...I think they also make a torrent one or something and a couple of others). in which case remove this first and reboot to try again.
Or it just wasn't cleared out in the memory for some reason. Again, try rebooting and running directly after the reboot.

I had these issues, was the bonjour add on and some reboots that was needed. Note that afterwards the fsck ran so that was 20 mins with a heart beat flashing light.
Also note that when its working, but you are using the reloaded method (as I do) then initially the dlink firmware loads and you will see this if using your browser, then after a bit this will disappear and the alt-f admin pages will be available instead.

ALSO note, that I am just a muppet user who's trying to help, so hopefully Joao logs on and comes and gives you some real info

I held down the button and it did nothing the only thing i fhave running is the bittorent client and upnp ive stopped both those services and am going to tryu rebooting i do have a ffp directory but did not set anything up it is not letting me delete anything something about permissions to start from scratch do i want to start from scratch ?

Haven't heard of spontaneous reboot, I presume you didn't push the reboot button by mistake

We'll I'd give it another go then But I guess you are doiing that.

there should be an alt-f.log now, maybe that has something about the reboot.

When you use the reloaded way of loading it sets the fun_plug replacement file to non-executable on first boot, so that next time you boot it doens't boot again and you just get original firmware.

this is a failsafe in case it doens't work, so next boot will go back t osomething that does.

so you need to make it executable and boot again to get into alt-f, when you are happy with alt-f and are sure it works ok for you then you can change a line in the fun_plug so that this doesn't happen any more and it will always go into alt-f

the fun_plug replacement file has a setting in it

Ok so i was able to chmod 777 fun_plug to get it to boot into alt-f now i trying to get to my files in explorer i can see the box but when i try to access the files i get a permission error i did set up a user on the alt-f config pages anyone ???

Boot into alt-f (reloaded) every time:

in the fun plug at the top there is

Follow the advice there and the executable permission on the fun_plug file will not be removed on boot. Then it will boot in every time.

chmod +x 'filename' can be used to get it set correctly if it is not right now.

I'm pretty poos on users, however if you are using your pc to log in then it's probalby as 'nobody' user. So any files or folders which are owned by another user probably won't be available to you. You probably, for example, have a number of files which are owned by root.

So either:

1. Change file permissions with chown command.

2. Log on as another user when browsing, like root....obvious option in mac as there is a 'connect as' button in the Finder, in ubuntu I can't see how to , I think via 'connect to server', but theres nothing obvious when just selecting the samba share. I don't run windows at home so not sure on there.

3. telnet/ssh in via the command line and login in as root or some other useful user and do all your changes via the command line

I'm lazy with security so I only use root user in general, and telnet in to do stuff. I'll also do stuff via ubuntu's gui, but as soon as I hit a permission issue I'll just do the action via telnet.

Sorry don't use transmission. There is something about it on the discussion group for alt-f (look on the alt-f webpage), also i think joao looks there more often so probably more chance of him helping you out.

I'm writing a FAQ and I would like to know what you have done to overcome the difficulties you felt -- while they are still fresh in your memory

Also, knowing what was wrong on the supplied instructions would be very helpful.

Have you managed to put Transmission downloading? There are two ways of doing that.
After you configuring it, particularly the "Torrents directory" input field, and starting it, you can:

- drop, thought ftp, samba, whatever... a torrent file to the "Torrents directory" that you specified; the download should start automatically
- or, go again to the configure page and hit the WebPage, which opens Transmission's own web page. There you can upload from your computer the torrent file you wish, and downloading will start.

Do you have upnp enabled in your modem router?

Usually bittorrent clients use a fixed port to communicate, and some users just open these ports in their modem/router.
However, Transmission has an option to use another port, or a random port, because some ISP squeeze usage on the standard port, so manually opening a port might not work.
Instead, Transmission tries to use upnp to open ports.

Some people don't like upnp, and I agree with then, but...

You can use transmisson-remote-gui to communicate from your desktop computer with Transmission on the dnd323: http://code.google.com/p/transmisson-remote-gui/

Thanks for your hard work Jcard i guess the biggest problem i found was navigating on the wiki page for the install process the part about do this if you dont have that and if you do this dont do that and so forth found it a little confusing. Also the editing of the fun_plug script to make the system boot into the alt-f was not very clear.

Hi.
I seem to have a semilar problem - I just find an alt-f-reloaded.log file like krenkey did. No ffp.

I understand that the fun_plug and Alt-F-0.1B6.tar should be copied to the root of DSN-323?
But I can't get permission to do so. I'm only able to copy to Volume_1 where I can change proberties to 777. Is that so?

I have tried with both windows FTP and FileZilla. (FileZilla can drag and drop - so that's my choise here. :-) )
