Disappearing Folder Contents When I Create a New File!

Hi again,

I'm having a strange issue with my DNS-323 through OS X.

When I first set it up, I copied over a few hundred GB of files and everything worked really nicely. Due to some work pressures, I left the unit powered down for a few weeks and came back to it recently to move some files to it.

Writing a file causes an error every time now. The Finder in OS X reports that it can't copy files or folders across because they've got names that are 'too long' (these are short names, even 'test.txt' is too long apparently). If I click either 'Stop' or 'Continue' in the little dialogue box, the contents of the parent folder on the DNS-323 disappear! I can't restore them through the Finder, but the files are all there when I telnet/chroot into the box. The new file or folder is there, but with no data.

I get the same problem if I try to create a new folder directly on the box, or if I let some other application (like iTunes) try to create a file.

If I delete the new file, the Finder refreshes and now lists the contents of the affected folder.

It's pretty weird behaviour.

I can read files perfectly well, and can happily play all my music from iTunes (I've moved my music database to the DNS-323). I just can't write to the drive now.

Has anyone seen this behaviour before? I'd be very grateful for any assistance here.

The details of my machine are: afpd installed, etch, 2x500GB Western Digital Raid Edition drives, OS X 10.4.9 client.

Can anyone help me with this? My DNS-323 is currently read-only because of this problem, and I don't know where to look.

Re: Disappearing Folder Contents When I Create a New File!

Well, with over 100 views there's been no response so I guess this has stumped everyone who read it. I've tried permissions changes, re-installing afpd as a package and by compiling it to no avail. All my efforts have come to nothing.

I've reformatted the drive and re-installed etch and afpd. I'm now in the process of copying about 200GB of files over - not a speedy process, but it works. This is my absolute last resort, and doesn't fix my problem - it just hides it. I still don't know what happened, if it will happen again or how to fix it.

My confidence in the DNS-323 is badly shaken. If I don't see any further problems in the next six months I'll start to trust this device. Until then it's only getting backups of files I've got other copies of. Until then I can't trust a backup device that stops backing up.

Re: Disappearing Folder Contents When I Create a New File!

Hi,

I had many weird file system problem, disappearing folders, unable to create files or folders etc. However, all fixed after I ran e2fsck.
I suspect my problems were due to playing around with hacks, shutting power while doing disk operations etc.
