MiniDLNA on DNS-323

I am relatively not technical so wanted to post for others folks like me. Very likely this instructions are not needed for more technical folks. This is just consolodating information on multiple sites.

My experience installing miniDLNA on DNS-323.

Setup
DNS-323
firmware: 1.10
hack: fun_plug 0.5
LG Smart TV : 47LM6400
I basically was using the upnp server on the dlink software but i didnt like lack of subtitle support over DLNA. After some research (and trying out on ubuntu) I realized minidlna would work with subtitles

Instructions:
1. Install fun_plug 0.5 (I did this long ago so dont remember but there are plenty of instructions if you google)
2. Connect to dns-323 via telnet
    a. telnet to your dns-323 (if you dont know how to do this, maybe better not to try this whole thing)
3. Download and install minidlna
    a. download by doing "wget http://numsys.eu/divers/minidlna-cvs-fr … .tgz"
    b. install by doing "funpkg -i minidlna-11-02-2012-cvs20120211.tgz"
    c. if successful remove the tgz by "rm minidlna-11-02-2012-cvs20120211.tgz". I run out of space so better to do this.
4. Configure minidlna (edit /ffp/etc/minidlna.conf)
    a. (if file is not writable) "chmod 666 /ffp/etc/minidlna.conf"
    b. "vi /ffp/etc/minidlna.conf" (you can edit this config file multiple ways. if you dont like editing with vi try copyng the file to pc editing and putting it back on dns-323)
    c. edit network interface
    i. on another telnet session do ifconfig and capture name of network interface. In my case egiga0 (first field on Ethernet line)
ii change "#network_interface=eth0" to "network_interface=egiga0". Note need to uncomment by removing egi
    d. update your media location
i update "media_dir=/opt" to your correct location
    e. update media server name
i update "#friendly_name=My DLNA Server". Remember to remove # and use name of your choice
    f. update other required (remember remove #!!!)
    i. change "#db_dir=/var/cache/minidlna" to
"db_dir=/mnt/HD_a2/ffp/var/cache/minidlna"
    ii. change "#log_dir=/var/log" to "log_dir=/mnt/HD_a2/ffp/var/log"
5. Install required libraries. For all the files on "http://numsys.eu/divers/minidlna-cvs-fred-arm-dns-323-compil/with/ do the following (first show as example)
    a. wget http://numsys.eu/divers/minidlna-cvs-fr … 1842-1.tgz
    b. funpkg -i ffmpeg-SVN-r21842-1.tgz
    c. rm ffmpeg-SVN-r21842-1.tgz
6. Start service
    a. Do: sh /ffp/start/minidlna.sh start

Note, for subtitles to work in my case:
1. Video file has to have same filename as subtitle file. for instance abc.avi and abc.srt
2. Video file and subtitle have to be on same subdirectory
3. Filename can not contain space. If it does replace for dots or underscore
4. I found an issue with foldername. I can not say exactly what causes a problem (spaces seem ok). But if you have issues and the foldername with "[", "(", etc try changing it.

On my LG 47LM6400, the subtitles show automatically if they work. If you click on the screen to show the menu, then video playback you can make adjustments to the subtitles position, font, etc

Also, you may want to turn off dlink's upnp server. Login to webinterface, etc.

Re: MiniDLNA on DNS-323

This is a great little guide! Easy to follow for nubbies like me.

Now some Qs:
- Is the subtitles the only factor to motivated you to install it over the upnp that comes with the DNS-323?
- Did you check Twonky? What would you say is the biggest difference with miniDLNA (besides the fact that is paid)?

Re: MiniDLNA on DNS-323

I can answer on 1) The point is that builtin UPNP fails to work with samsung smart tv. TV sees the device, but no media files appears in it at all. From what I saw, all the media with builtin subtitles worked seamlessly on TV. Can comment on external sub files.

Regarding 2) that whould be also interesting for me to know if twonky gives some improvements over minidlna.

Re: MiniDLNA on DNS-323

I just installed miniDLNA following these instructions, but the packages mentioned by KileK http://dns323.kood.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=7250 (my ffp is 07). Luckily all those packages (except the actual miniDLNA) were already referenced by Uli's uwsitedownloader, so no need to manual download.

It works great! I can already, just 10 minutes after installation say that is waaaaayyy too better than the crappy server in Dlink firmware. I found my files available right away. With Dlink's took days and it wasn't even possible to see all my media. Also I experienced disconnections all the time.

Great job, garce, KileK, Uli and all those contributing to this forums. I'm not skilled at all in Linux but managed amazingly thanks to all! tongue

My only Q now is, is there any GUI/WebInterface to manage it easily?

Re: MiniDLNA on DNS-323

Thanx for the guide. Uninstalled fun_plug 0.7 and reinstalled 0.5 on my DNS-321, did everything as in your guide but inotify is not working. Ending with error:

......................
[2013/01/12 13:33:07] scanner.c:803: warn: Scanning /mnt/HD_a2/MULTIMEDIA/VIDEO finished (1539 files)!
[2013/01/12 13:33:08] playlist.c:100: warn: Parsing playlists...
[2013/01/12 13:33:08] playlist.c:223: warn: Finished parsing playlists.
[2013/01/12 13:33:52] inotify.c:91: error: inotify_add_watch(/mnt/HD_a2/MULTIMEDIA/VIDEO) [Inappropriate ioctl for device]
.....................

Does anyone knows a working combination for DNS-321 ?

Re: MiniDLNA on DNS-323

It's possible the version of minidlna referenced in the first post was compiled for devices with 'proper' inotify support, whereas the DNS-323 (and possibly 321?) have a rather old version of the Linux kernel, which requires inotify being treated differently.

Is the DNS-321 an oabi or eabi device?
What Linux version is it running? You can use the following command to find out:

Code:

$ uname -a

I might be able to compile a current version of minidlna for ffp-0.7 (arm or oabi)

Re: MiniDLNA on DNS-323

Can you follow the tutorial at http://dns323.kood.org/forum/viewtopic.php?id=7002 to find out if the device supports eabi?

Re: MiniDLNA on DNS-323

Reinstalled ffp 0.7 arm
opened slacker -i and found minidlna-1.0.25-arm-0.txz by barmalej2 (somehow missed that before)
and it works, I mean inotify
will test minidlna by giving all my multimedia collection to chew

thanx for your help

Re: MiniDLNA on DNS-323

How notify_interval and inotify are related in minidlna.conf ? What is the maximum value for notify_interval ? Do I need It when inotify works correctly ? Can I turn it off and how to do this ? After putting all my videos and photos  (about 20000 files) to minidlna, hdd's are working nonstop and do not enter hibernation mode.

Re: MiniDLNA on DNS-323

Can we add transcode support to MiniDLNA. I want to stream flac files to a blu ray player which doesnt support flac, so have to transcode to wav, is this possible with DLNA and DNS 323?
