Hello guys
I've had a dns 313 for a long time but never really used it as for videos the stream keeps stopping. I have been reading up on your forum about Native Lenny.
I have been trying to install http://dns323.kood.org/howto:chroot_debian with no avail.
I have noticed Charminbear's install guide (http://www.msbd.de/dns313/Install_lenny_en.rtf) but the link doesn't seam to work now.
Does anyone have instructions on how to get either to work.
Thanks

Do you have a 313 or a 323? For 313 check out my post http://dns323.kood.org/forum/viewtopic. … 314#p48314
I have even added a script for install. All you have to do is to insert a disk to your NAS and plug it over USB to a linux box...
It will erase everything from the disk and you will have a native Lenny.

Hi aFoP,
Thankyou for your quick response. My DNS-313 is revision A.
Will your script work for my machine? If not what else would you suggest.
Thanks.

Hi
I have successfully installed and have a green status light.
How do i now access this over the network. How do i find out the ip of the device or what is the name.
Thanks

Hi, your device should get IP from DHCP server in case you have one in your network...most probably this DHCP server will be your router
The hostname is DNS-313.
So you can discover your LAN with nmap tool on linux:
nmap 192.168.2.0/24 (if your router's IP is 192.168.2.1)
nmap 192.168.1.0/24 ((if your router's IP is 192.168.1.1)
becasue the router most probably provides you with one of the above LAN segments...
And check the IPs what you find, one of them should be the NAS.
for me it is 192.168.2.114, and I logged in via ssh on port 22...
Then you have a lot to do to update, customize your NAS etc..
As I remember transmission is already reachable on port 9091.
Here is the config file i use:
root@DNS-313:~# cat /etc/transmission/settings.json

HI aFoP.
Awesome. Thanks for your help. I'm unsure what the password is for transmission.
Thanks

In case you can ping the device login via telnet to it.
Then you have to become root and you can set your own password. But make sure you stop transmission before it, find the pid of it and kill it...
kill -9 <pid>
or do it in one line:
kill -9 `ps aux | grep transmission | grep -v grep | awk -F" " '{print $2}'`
Then enter the password here into /etc/transmission/settings.json:
"rpc-password": "{633de78b9a72a2d94dc19c1bd503dbf4cd3a3e90v9ufG5vy",
like
"rpc-password": "YOURNEWPASSWORD",
and reboot the NAS!

Hi aFoP,
Could you, please, describe step by step installation process?
I've downloaded debian_v2_revB.tar.gz and dns313_install.sh. Then I load ubuntu 13.10 livecd (using virtualbox), and tried to run your script and that's what happend:
$ sh dns313_install.sh Your DNS-313 system will be installed now. dns313_install.sh: 5: read: Illegal option -e Check the name of your HDD which will be used for NAS from fdisk output below: dns313_install.sh: 14: read: Illegal option -e last_lba(): I don't know how to handle files with mode 40755 You will not be able to write the partition table. fdisk: unable to read /dev/: Is a directory umount: /dev/2 is not mounted (according to mtab) umount: /dev/3 is not mounted (according to mtab) /dev/1: No such file or directory mke2fs 1.42.8 (20-Jun-2013) Could not stat /dev/2 --- No such file or directory The device apparently does not exist; did you specify it correctly? mke2fs 1.42.8 (20-Jun-2013) Could not stat /dev/3 --- No such file or directory The device apparently does not exist; did you specify it correctly? mkdir: cannot create directory /mnt/dns313_inst: Permission denied mount: only root can do that tar (child): -C: Cannot open: No such file or directory tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting now tar: Child returned status 2 tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now The NAS will use DHCP, however you have to add a nameserver to have DNS functionality dns313_install.sh: 31: read: Illegal option -e dns313_install.sh: 33: dns313_install.sh: cannot create /mnt/dns313_inst/etc/resolv.conf: Directory nonexistent umount: /dev/3 is not mounted (according to mtab) Install ready ...
Also I have strange behaviour of fanspeed.
root@media:~# fanspeed g write_fan_speed: IOCTL fail -1091683008
Any advice?

Hi!
You ran the script as normal user...it must have been run as root (either by logging in as root or you should change to root by "sudo su -".)
I don't know whether you can become root by only using a Live CD, you should run the script on an installed system instead...

I guess you can only do it by installing transmission from source. Here is a how-to for debian squeeze (not for debian lenny), but I didn't try it myself:
