Hi, Guys,

It has been quite a while since I have been on here. My first DNS323 is still going strong, but my backup second DNS323 is now playing up and looking for some advice.

Both have f/w version 1.08. I've not really touched them for ages. the second has been off for more than a year. I was using it only to back up my initial DNS323. Both are/were set as raid 1.

This weekend I decided to rsync my data from DNS1 to DNS2. DNS1 has 2 500GB drives, DNS2 has 2 2TB drives.

I did receive a message disk full from DNS2, and that is probably because I rync'd to the wrong folder.

I tried to shut the DNS2 down, with the switch on the front, but it would not shutdown. I'd killed the rsync processes on DNS2 before trying this.

I can still telnet into DNS2, but cannot access from windows. Win7 sees DNS2 but the diagnostic says refused connection.

As this is just a backup, I decided that I would rebuid the array and format the disks, but get error Hard Drive(s) Formatting Failure. (Error Code:107). and the data remains intact.

I am not that conversant with Linux, but am happy with command line options if given exactly what to do.

So now I am either trying to start all over as if I have just bought a new unit with new disks, or correct what is there and remove errant files.

I have fun plug on both units, but is has been ages since I installed it.

Can someone please supply some ideas on how to get the DNS2 unit back up and running. The unit is at fault as I tested mapping the unit from another computer and got the 'network path cannot be found'

DNS2 unit has blue network light but pink disk lights. Both 2TB disks are recognised in the GUI.

I believe the smb is screwed somehow.?

I booted another PC with a Knoppix CD and again was able to see the device, but unable to see the shares on it.

I have simply allowed All to access Volume_1 via the GUI and then added myself as a test

Ok,

On my working unit it shows

When there is something wrong with the filesystem of your nas, the kernel is not aware of it. Your postings look fine.

When it's only samba, you should restart it. Unfortunately I don't know how to do that on a 323. Maybe

I have been searching all morning and must admit I'd forgotten about the hard reset on the back of the unit, which I have just this minute done.

I now have to remember what I next need to do to get it back up an running as I have now lost the static ip address.

I had rebooted the unit several times yesterday.

Even investigating Alt-F which I have found while looking for solutions.

Windows diagnostic does not help much

I've hard booted and reset ip address etc.

There is something definitely wrong with the setup. One minute the SMB list is there with Volume_1, and then it disappears. If I restart, it appears again.

Power button is also pink.?

I was hoping to use this experience in case my main DNS323 went this way, but have not learnt much at present.

If you have no idea as what to try next, I'll give that Alt-F f/w a go.?

So it seems samba crashes. You can see that by executing

It shows all listening daemons, including the ports they have open. I think smbd should have 2 ports open. If there is no smbd running, maybe you can find out why it crashes by executing it manually, without daemonizing.

Here '3' is a debug level, and you have to check if your configuration file is indeed on that place,

Have reloaded FW 1.08 hoping that would clear stuff out. When I do that for my VOIP box I have to re enter all the settings, but no improvement.

Right now I would just like to get it back to brand new in the box and start from scratch. The GUI does not appear to apply all the settings I apply.
