Since I'm thinking about buying the dns-323 I'm then wondering about what drives does actually works; I seen some thread mentioning that they have had issues with some drives and I'm aware of that D-link has a support thread as well. But, it would be kind of nice to hear what other drives that has been tested and that you're running with here.

I'm thinking about getting a pair of the Samsung Spinpoint 500gb SATA/300 7200rpm - good choice or not, I don't know. But nice price and 5yr warrant. Open for suggestions here. On the other hands I've been looking at the Western Digital RE2 500gb SATA/300 7200rpm drives that has RAID-specific, time-limited error recovery (TLER).

And while on the topic of how it performs, I'm also curious about the uptime.

I have two Seagate Barracuda ES 7200.10 SATA II (3.0Gb/s) 250GB hard drives
which are working fine. RAID 1 (mirror), Ext2, firmware v1.02

Howdy,

I've got 3 systems, 2 each running the a pair of the same Seagate 320's and 1 running a pair of Seagate 400's.

All running 1.02 EXT2 RAID 1.

I'm very happy with them !!! All running for over 30 days.

I had all kinds of headaches when I started, but it was partly due to bad drives (not the Seagate's I mentioned above) and partly due to running EXT3 from 1.01, and then upgrading to 1.02 (when I found all kinds of weird issues with the filesystem) - formatting (where I had no choice but EXT2 due to 1.02) solved the problem.

As the DNS-323 is a Software RAID system, will it actually benefit from TLER or not? Tried to Google this up, but didn't find a clean answer. The description from WD mentions 'coordinated error handling' which implies that the RAID Controller/Software should be aware of the TLER mechanisms of the drive.

But; I don't know - maybe someone else does.

I'm starting to think that you might only be able to make use of it when using hardware based raid system and not software based as I asume that the dns-323 make use of, or?

SATAII is run on 3GB/S, so it should be no problem. My 323 is working fine with the two sata2, 3gb/s drive

I was using the 1.5Gb/s jumper mode. I didn't realize the jumper was there, it is really small!
I removed the jumper and reinstalled the drives. System seems normal. I ran an IOmeter test
and no change in the network performance 15MBytes/sec write and 21MBytes/sec read. I don't
have a hdparm binary to test the internal disk access speeds.

It's interesting to choose two WD sata disk with 16mo buffer. It costs just a few bucks more bur perform great !

I have two x Samsung HD400LJ drives (400GB/7200rpm/8MB cache) running well so far with RAID-1 / ext2.

I added the (1 included) jumper to downgrade to 1.5Gbps (instead of 3Gbps) before installing -- I'd seen others did this without apparent repercussions, so figured what the heck. SilentPCReview.com reported on this drive and measured that each drive consumes 7.4 watts idle, 10.4 watts seek (normal).

Just installed one Samsung 500 GB SATA 16 mb (in 3Gbps mode) and it seams to run just fine!

As no one has mentioned Hitachi..
I am running 2 of the E7K500 Deskstar (HDS725050KLA360), 7200rpm, 500GB drives in RAID 1 config. Absolutely no issues. I connect both a Windoz and a MAC OSX machine to the DNS. Both machines have successfully backed up to the DNS using MS Backup and SuperDuper! respectively. BTW, there is a problem with OSX 10.4.8 and SuperDuper! in that if you don't HIDE the app while it is running, at some point in the backup, it will crash. Hiding the app solves the problem and Apple hopefully will have the problem fixed in Leopard. The MS backup is a bit over 6BG and the OSX full disc backup resulted in a file just over 129GB.
